STEM is Global

We invite you to submit student work and voices as part of North Carolina’s celebration of International Education Week - November 15-19, 2021.

International Education Week (IEW) is an opportunity to celebrate the benefits of international education and exchange worldwide. IEW offers the chance to expand awareness of and interest in global education, and to gain a new cultural understanding by sampling a small part of life beyond the shores of America. A variety of IEW activities are being planned by NCDPI to promote International Education Week in North Carolina during the week of Nov. 15-19.

  • Expand awareness of and interest in global issues and global learning
  • Collaborate with and learn from international student groups
  • Gain a new cultural understanding
  • Sample a small part of life beyond the shores of America

The NC IEW Student Showcase provides students an opportunity to share their interest and understanding of global issues, global learning, and cultural awareness through various projects, presentations, or work samples. We welcome virtual submissions of student work samples demonstrating Global Education competencies through examples such as Student/School Performances or Presentations, Student Work Narratives, or Student Interviews. Selected submissions will be highlighted on the NCDPI Facebook Page.

NCSTA
Howard Ginsburg

Howard Ginsburg, North Carolina Department of Public Instruction wins the NC Science Teachers Association (NCSTA) Distinguished Service in Science Education in North Carolina Administrator Award for 2021

The NCSTA Distinguished Service in Science Education in North Carolina Administrator Award is given to a person exhibiting leadership in science education; contributing to improvements in science education; and excelling in the aspects of science education.

This honor is determined by other science educators throughout NC and serves as recognition of Howard Ginsburg’s professional excellence and contributions to science education in North Carolina.

"Howard works tirelessly to advance STEM education in NC. His work starts with the

belief that for students in NC to have a productive future they need to be able to be

problem-solvers, to access and use information in new and innovative ways, to work in

teams, communicate effectively, and to be engaged in their own learning. The

traditional model of education is no longer an option for students. Howard makes a

compelling case that STEM education ties all those skills together. It’s not only his

knowledge of STEM that is noteworthy. It is his humor and the warm way he engages

with everyone. Howard works hard to make NC DPI an agency that is responsive and

approachable. He is a trusted advisor to me in my work and I’m sure he is for others."

Greetings from NCSciFest HQ!

After last year’s wildly successful virtual SciMatch initiative, we are pleased to announce that we are launching a hybrid edition of our program for 2022. In April, 50 North Carolina Scientists from all walks of life will share their love of what they do with 50 middle schools across the state! Because we know virtual visits can occur regardless of the conditions of the pandemic, we are encouraging everyone to plan for a virtual visit. However, if an in-person visit works for you and your Scientist match, go for it!

If you’re a middle school teacher interested in having a scientist visit with your students this April, visit https://ncsciencefestival.org/scimatch for more details and to register.

The deadline to apply is Nov 30. We’ll host a virtual orientation for the selected teachers and scientists in December and Professional Development webinars in February and March. Sign up now!

AQ-IQ Contest

2021 - 2022 Air Quality-IQ Contest for Seventh Grade Students

Air Quality AQ-IQ Contest

Each year the North Carolina Division of Air within the Department of Environmental Quality coordinates the AQ-IQ Contest for Seventh grade science students. The contest asks students to:

  • research an air quality problem,
  • look for solutions to the problem, and
  • create a creative/artistic, on-line, poster, or video project to help others learn about air and air pollutions solutions.

The projects will be turned in using an on-line tool, and can be turned in at any time up to March 7, 2022. The on-line format allows more flexibility in both the traditional, on-line and distance learning classroom. The schedule will also allow your students to participate in any academic calendar or pacing.
