Monthly Standards Update -- 4th Issue
In March 2021, the North Carolina State Board of Education unanimously approved the 2020 ELD Standard Course of Study (SCOS) for implementation in the 2022-2023 school year. This approval marked the start of the Installation Phase where the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team prepares for initial implementation of the ELD SCOS through planning PSU professional development, support, and resource development.
In an effort to keep stakeholders informed during the Installation Phase, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team provides monthly standards updates that contain the latest announcements and current news regarding the ELD SCOS. These updates are sent every first Tuesday of the month.
NC ELD
Standards Resource Hub
The NCDPI ESL/Title III Team has created the NC ELD Standards Resource Hub. This repository will house all the resources for supporting school administrators, all teachers of English learners, and EL families/caregivers during the implementation of the adopted Standard Course of Study. The range of resources offers users an opportunity to determine their own specific needs and find materials that suit them.

- Parent/Caregiver Resources to assist caregivers in supporting their students' learning outside of school

ELD Glossary Highlight
The Glossary provides the terms and definitions related to the NC Standard Course of Study for English Language Development (ELD), as well as other acronyms and terms related to ESL/Title III. This document provides a range of terms and definitions to support all EL stakeholders, including administrators, educators, coordinators, and community members in implementation of the NC ELD Standard Course of Study. Begin exploring the Glossary now as we prepare to implement these standards in all North Carolina schools beginning in the 2022-23 school year.

ELD SCOS Training Opportunity
From March 21-April 8, 2022, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team will provide professional development on implementation of the NC ELD Standard Course of Study and share the resources housed in the NC ELD Standards Resource Hub. Professional development will be provided virtually and will be differentiated based on PSU populations.
In preparation for this PD, the NCDPI ESL/Title III Team invites PSUs to identify team members to attend.

ELD Coffee Chats
The WIDA ELD Standards are the NC State Board of Education Adopted Standard Course of Study (NCSCOS) for students identified as English Learner students (ELs) in the state. There is a lot to learn and explore in the 2020 edition, so the NCDPI EL Support Team will be facilitating Coffee Chats! These interactive sessions are designed to support educators as they work their way through WIDA’s six-module eLearning course entitled, The WIDA ELD Standards Framework: A Collaborative Approach (available in the WIDA Secure Portal).
The Coffee Chat sessions are designed to help educators synthesize the module materials to be used in their own educational environment through discussion, activities and support as they learn to:
- Connect current knowledge and practices to the 2020 WIDA ELD Standards Framework
- Integrate student assets into content learning
- Make content connections to the Key Language Uses
- Identify Language Expectations
- Find opportunities to make language visible
- Use the WIDA Proficiency Level Descriptors
These virtual sessions will be offered 4:30 - 5:30 PM on the following dates:
- Nov 15 (complete Module 4 before the Coffee Chat)
- Nov 29 (complete Module 5 before the Coffee Chat)
- Dec 06 (complete Module 6 before the Coffee Chat)

Educators who missed previous sessions are encouraged to check the video recording and explore the shared resources on the ELD Standards Based Resource page of the Hub before joining the next session on November 15, 2021 at 4:30 pm.
