Please join Accountability Services for a series of webinars on the NCTest embedded calculators. These webinars will provide insights on how to use the embedded calculators in NCTest.  This year, we are also pleased to offer content on leveraging our embedded online calculators to create interactive student lessons.

These webinars are intended for mathematics teachers who are administering NC Interims, NC Check-Ins, End-of-Grade, or End-of-Course assessments online, but school-based administrators and district-level personnel are welcome to register and attend. Please click on the link below to register.

COMAP

Announcing the 2021
24th High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM®)
and
NEW! Middle Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MidMCM)
November 3 – 16, 2021

COMAP’s High School Mathematical Contest in Modeling (HiMCM) and Middle Mathematical Contest in Modeling (MidMCM) are international contests designed to provide high school and middle school/level students the opportunity to work as team members to engage in and improve their modeling, problem solving, and writing skills. Teams of up to four students from your school apply mathematics to model and develop a solution to a real-world problem. There is no limit to the number of teams per school. Teams with all students 14 ½ years of age or younger participate in MidMCM. See www.himcmcontest.com or www.midmcm.com for complete rules.

Watch the Informational Webinar video (and find many other HiMCM/MidMCM resources and information) available at http://www.mathmodels.org/Problems/Webinar/himcm/index.html.

Previous problems include:

  • Drone Clusters as Sky Light Displays
  • Charge! The Impact of “plugging-in” our Electronic Devices
  • Find the Top 10 Roller Coasters in the World
  • The Best Summer Job

Let the contests be part of your class plans this fall. We encourage you and your students to form one or more teams to represent your school in this rewarding contest. Teachers report using the contest as part of a mathematics or modeling course, or as a math club activity. Some students form a team and participate just for fun. Please share this information with mathematics teachers, STEM educators (science, technology, engineering, etc.), and students.

2021 HiMCM/MidMCM CONTEST DATES ARE November 3-16, 2021. Teams choose their own working times within this contest window to work in-person and/or virtually. COMAP announces results in February 2022.

Go to www.himcmcontest.com / www.midmcm.com for all contest information and to download the 2021 HiMCM/MidMCM Flyer. Please post the flyer in your department and share with other teachers and students.

Register for HiMCM and MidMCM at https://www.comap.com/highschool/contests/himcm/himcmpayment.html.

The February 2022 MCM/ICM (our undergraduate contests) registration is also open (and available to high school students):  https://www.comap.com/undergraduate/contests/

NCCTM Logo

Dear NCCTM Membership,

You have already received notice of our decision to not have a face-to-face 2021 Fall Conference. I want to personally apologize for how this information was shared. This decision was not easy. Many factors and countless discussions played into a decision we sincerely hoped we would not face again. Even so, we are sorry that we failed to share all of the details in a timely and sensitive manner. (More information regarding our decision is posted on www.ncctm.org and our social media sites.)

The NCCTM 2021 Conference is NOT “cancelled”–just re-imaged. So many “things” have been altered from the pandemic, including our conference experiences. However, it is very important to the NCCTM Board, the Conference and Programming committees, and various affiliates of our organization that we provide opportunities to learn and grow as mathematicians, as teachers of mathematics, and as professionals to ALL members of our organization. We have two very exciting opportunities for you. We hope you can join us.

First:

Our fall leadership seminar is still ON in a virtual format and at times we hope will be more convenient for ALL members- those inside and outside (and even upside down) the classroom.

This will be a three-day virtual experience featuring two keynote speakers,

Monday, 11/8: Dr. Robert Berry

Tuesday 11/9: Dr. Catherine Edmonds .

(Both keynotes will be delivered live those afternoons from 3:00 to 4:30.)

Wednesday 11/10 features facilitated roundtable discussions by grade bands.

Registration for Fall Leadership 2021 will be $20.00 per attendee.

A CEU certificate for 5 hours of contact time will be issued.

Keynote sessions will be recorded and stored on a secure site until the end of November. Joining live is always the most fun and engaging, but additional opportunities exist to meet the demands of your schedule. Information including keynote bios, descriptions, and registration will be on www.ncctm.org and our social media sites by October 7.

Second:

SAVE THE DATE for our three day February Frenzy!

A virtual conference complete with concurrent sessions led by your peers with opportunities for growth, sharing, and networking. We’re really excited to bring this to you in a format that we hope will allow more members to attend.

“February Frenzy” will be held virtually, but live

Tuesday, February 22, 2022 from 3:30 to 7:30;

Thursday, February 24, 2022 from 3:30 to 7:30; and

Saturday, February 26, 2022 from 10am to 4pm.

Presentations will be every hour on the hour during all times and there will be sessions, including keynotes, to choose from.

Registration for this event will be at a reduced rate and include CEU certificates.

Details will be released towards the end of November.

Your commitment to powerful mathematics education for ALL in North Carolina, your membership and commitment to NCCTM, and your commitment to the students of NC are important to us.

We hope you can join us as we try to once again navigate the “stormy waters” of a pandemic and seek to provide you with meaningful and powerful experiences to enhance your instructional practices.

Hope to “see” you in November!

Stefanie Buckner Hill

Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching (PAEMST)

The K-6 Cycle for the Presidential Awards is now open!

Nominations and applications are now open for the 2021-22 cycle of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) for K-6 teachers of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and computer science.

The entire application cycle has been moved forward a few months, with nominations closing on Friday, January 7 and applications due to be completed by Sunday, February 6.

Visit www.paemst.org to nominate a great K-6 teacher!

Did you know that a person does not have to be nominated to complete a Presidential Award application?

Each year, several our state’s finalists, and eventual awardees, began their application without a nomination. Any eligible K-6 teacher of science, technology, engineering, mathematics, or computer science can complete an application. To start an application, visit www.paemst.org.

If you have any questions or would like to know more about the North Carolina Presidential Awards Program, contact the State Coordinator for PAESMT, Joseph Reaper, at joseph.reaper@dpi.nc.gov.
