New Division Name and Director
In an effort to align the support our team provides and the strategic plans of agency leadership, the K-12 Standards, Curriculum, and Instruction division is now known as the Division of Academic Standards. Our work and the support we provide has not changed. We remain committed to supporting NC educators with resources and professional development that assist with standards-aligned instruction, along with assistance for legislative and grant-related programs.
We are excited to announce Dr. Mary Hemphill-Joseph as the new Director of Academic Standards! Dr. Hemphill-Joseph comes to the division with a wealth of experience, from teacher to principal and most recently, the Director of K-12 Computer Science and Technology Education at DPI.

September 12-18, 2021 Advocate, Educate, Celebrate!
North Carolina Arts in Education Week is next week, September 12th through 18th, and Arts NC has several things planned in celebration. Congress passed House Resolution 275 in 2010 designating the week beginning with the second Sunday in September as National Arts in Education Week. During this week, the field of arts education joins together in communities across the country to advocate, educate, and celebrate about the impact and transformative power of the arts in education.
-
ADVOCATE: Raise the issue of arts education with leaders and elected officials.
-
EDUCATE: Ensure your community knows the impact of arts in schools.
-
CELEBRATE: Tell the world about the value of arts education in our schools.

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education
In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
