Gilder Lehrman TOY 2021

2021 Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year for North Carolina

Congratulations to this year’s winner of the Gilder Lehrman History Teacher of the Year Award for North Carolina, Hannah Page. Hannah is originally from Jackson, Mississippi. She holds a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology from Millsaps College, a Master of Arts in Teaching in History Education from Duke University, and a Masters in Public Administration from the University of Georgia. Hannah has worked as a Community Liaison at Raleigh Charter High School, and has taught history there for 8 years. She loves learning alongside (and from) her students, with particular emphasis on the way history is written, and how those narratives change over time--as well as the ways in which "the past is alive in the present." She is an avid baker of sourdough bread, and loves to share that bread (and its historical connections) with friends, family, students, and colleagues.

Would you like to nominate someone?

The Outer Banks Lighthouse Society

The Outer Banks Lighthouse Society is a non-profit whose 26-year existence focuses on preservation and education of the lighthouses of North Carolina. The Society can provide a wealth of information to those who are researching North Carolina's Lighthouses. Currently,  a video presentation is being developed for kids which tells the unprinted stories about NC's lighthouses: ghost stories, the games that Lighthouse Keepers' children and grandchildren played while growing up at the lighthouses, and more. There will be virtual presentations telling these stories.

On the website, you can find a video about existing (and some former) lighthouses, their purpose and history. In addition, there is a teacher resource page with activities for children. Also, a beautiful patch is offered to kids of any age who complete the requirements. Learn more: https://www.outerbankslighthousesociety.org/kids-teachers-2.html

Grant Opportunity: The Outer Banks Lighthouse Society also offers three grants of up to $1000 to schools and organizations to help teachers bring children to visit the towers. Though it is too late to apply for a grant to visit this year, please keep it in mind for 2022. More information can be found on the above page on the Teacher Resource link.

Please feel free to direct your students to the site to learn more: https://www.outerbankslighthousesociety.org/
