Biennium- A two-year term of legislative activity

Public Bill- Legislation enacted into law that applies to the public at large

Local Bill- Legislation put into law that has limited application (How many counties)- Local bills do not have to be signed by the governor

Sponsor- The legislator who presents a bill or resolution for consideration

Resolution- A document that expresses the sentiment or intent of the legislature or a chamber. Resolutions, when finalized, go to the Secretary of State

Recent Visits Literacy in Lee County  |  Friday, June 04, 2021 Continuing their conversations with educators across the state, Department of Public Instruction Superintendent Catherine Truitt, members of the DPI team and regional staff spent time early this month in Lee County with teachers, principals and district leaders to learn about their literacy journey. District members shared their story of literacy within the county, expressing their eagerness for what is to come through the Science of Reading and LETRS training.

myFutureNC  - Ensuring that by 2030, 2 million North Carolinians have a high-quality credential or a postsecondary degree by 2030. Annual Report: A Year in Review 2019-2020 - Report to the Joint Legislative Education Oversight Committee of the North Carolina General Assembly The first cohort of myFutureNC Local Educational Attainment Collaboratives is being launched in partnership with the UNC School of Government’s ncIMPACT Initiative. Each of these collaboratives will establish local educational attainment goals, and identify and execute strategies to increase attainment in their local communities.  myFutureNC is a state-led organization; however, the work must be and is locally owned and driven. Additional details about this work can be found here and through the ncIMPACT project page.

North Carolina Teacher Cadet ‍The North Carolina Teacher Cadet Program began in 1997 and has proven to be successful in increasing student interest in the teaching profession with the long-term focus on “growing our own” teachers.  We had the privilege and pleasure of experiencing the Teacher Cadet curriculum in person at the Department of Public Instruction this week.  Superintendent Truitt spoke to the group about her North Star and Vision for education. SBE Summer Intern - Sarah Haynes Sarah Haynes is an undergraduate at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill studying Public Policy and Sociology. Ms. Haynes is interning with the State Board of Education through UNC's Institute of Politics. After taking a critical look at her own educational experience, she hopes to impact K-12 public education by diminishing opportunity gaps. Ms. Haynes has taken a special interest in disaster response in an education and is excited for the opportunity to observe how the State Board of Education is handling COVID-19 from a legislative perspective.

Sarah Haynes: SBE Summer Intern - Resilience

Resilience is the capacity to recover quickly from difficulties. As an intern with the State Board of Education, I am researching key factors of school resiliency after natural disasters. This research has increased my appreciation for teachers and school administration because their acts of dedication and passion for students are the work of heroes. This research has shown me the extent of what a strong community can do, and I hope that some of my findings can be used to help North Carolina be resilient as we recover from COVID-19. I look forward to sharing my progress throughout the summer!
