- Dr. Ashburn met individually with all 180 staff members within her first 60 days as principal and also visited every English class to meet with students and hear from them first-hand. She said she asked students the same two questions she had posed to staff members: “What is great about Broughton?” and “What can we do better?”

- Bill Summary
- Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief Fund = $3,260,772,535
- Federal funds received by the State under the ARP from ESSER Funds are only appropriated up to the estimated amount set forth for the program. Any positions created with the funds shall terminate at the earlier of the funds being fully expended or the deadline established by applicable federal law and guidance for use of the funds. The Department of Public Instruction shall reserve those funds for the purpose of providing a minimum amount of per pupil federal grant funds for all public school units, including charter schools, and for certain residential schools for school facility repairs and improvements to respond to COVID-19.

Biennium- A two-year term of legislative activity
Public Bill- Legislation enacted into law that applies to the public at large
Local Bill- Legislation put into law that has limited application (How many counties)- Local bills do not have to be signed by the governor
Sponsor- The legislator who presents a bill or resolution for consideration
Resolution- A document that expresses the sentiment or intent of the legislature or a chamber. Resolutions, when finalized, go to the Secretary of State

Longleaf Commitment Grant Program - for NC High School Graduates
Governor Cooper, in partnership with the NC Community College System and the State Education Assistance Authority, has announced the creation of the Longleaf Commitment Grant program.
What:
This grant program will allow eligible 2021 high school graduates the opportunity to apply for a grant that covers tuition and fees at any of North Carolina's 58 community colleges for up to two years.
Eligibility requirements from 2021 high schools seniors:
- Graduate from a North Carolina high school in 2021
- Be a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes
- Be a first-time college student (Career & College Promise (CCP) and Early/Middle College High School students are eligible)
- Enroll in a curriculum program during the 2021-22 academic year
- Enroll in at least 6 credit hours per semester
- Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) for 2021-22
- Have an Expected Family Contribution (EFC) from $0 - $15,000. (“EFC” is based upon student’s FAFSA determination)
- Renew FAFSA for the 2022-23 academic year and meet the Satisfactory Academic Progress requirements of the college
The three steps high school graduates need to complete to get started:
- Applicants must apply for admission to the community college they plan to attend here.
- Applicants must complete residency determination through the North Carolina Residency Determination Service.
- Lastly, applicants must complete the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), here.
