Maintenance

Tonight's Home Base Maintenance Period

The next Home Base maintenance is scheduled for tonight, February 19, 2021.  Currently, PowerSchool is the only known application that will undergo maintenance.  All other Home Base applications will remain available.

The PowerSchool application will be brought down for one night onlyFriday, February 19 at 7 p.m. and returned to service by 7 a.m., Saturday morning, February 20.  The application will be made accessible to all users once maintenance is complete.

Note:  Each year, a list of scheduled maintenance windows are published by NCDPI.  This is published in advance to help teachers and administrators better prepare for temporary outages and loss of access.  Please review the 2020-2021 maintenance schedule and put these dates on your calendar. In most cases, the entire window is not necessary and we can return systems to service earlier than listed. If emergency maintenance is required in addition to these scheduled dates, all users will be notified in advance.

Updates

Math Options Charts Update

Good day Math Leaders!

The Math Options Charts have been updated on the NCDPI website and on the K-12 Mathematics Google Site

There have been a few major changes to the format and layout of the Math Options Charts.

  • The Math Options Charts are now based on the students’ entry year into high school. There are three Math Options Charts now available:
    • Students who entered high school prior to the 2020-21 school year
    • Students who entered high school during the 2020-21 school year
    • Students who will enter high school during the 2021-22 school year
  • The Math Options Charts now contain three charts instead of four, as the Community College and Career after High School Charts are combined into one chart.

On the K-12 Mathematics Google Site, you will find the Math Options Charts Web Page. On this webpage you can find:

  • Support videos:
    • Using the Math Options Charts
    • Updates to all Math Options Charts for February 2021
  • Math Options Charts
  • Contact Information for Questions

Summary of Course Changes for the coming school year

  • AP44 Horticulture II Landscaping has been added as a new option that is available for all students.
  • Interior Design Changes:
    • FI51 Interior Design I, F152 Interior Design II, and FI153 Interior Design Applications courses will become disabled starting the 2021-22 school year, except for students completing credit recovery. Students who have earned credit in FI51 or FI52 can still use those courses to meet the mathematics graduation requirements.
    • The Interior Design courses have been given new course codes and titles.

Disabled Interior Design Courses

New Interior Design Courses

FI51 Interior Design I

FI21 Interior Design Fundamentals

F152 Interior Design II

FI22 Interior Design Studio

FI53 Interior Design Applications

FI23 Interior Design Technology

  • Due to the new courses having less math content, only one pair of the new courses will now earn a math credit for graduation. This new paired course option will be immediately available to all students.
    • FI21 Interior Design Fundamentals AND FI23 Interior Design Technology
  • See Memo from CTE.

Further guidance is provided for the use of Introductory Mathematics, Alternate Mathematics I, and Alternate Mathematics II for students who have been identified with a learning disability in mathematics and whose IEP team determines the students cannot master the content of NC Math 1.

Updates

Update to COVID 19 Pass/Withdraw

Previously, NCDPI requested all PSUs make changes to their Special Codes Scale to ensure COVID grading codes are not utilized in the 2020-2021 school year and moving forward. NCDPI instructed PSUs to uncheck Use As a Final Grade checkbox to prevent teachers from erroneously assigning these codes. However, the Home Base team has discovered this process causes display issues on the transcript with the UNIVERSITY OF NORTH CAROLINA BOARD OF GOVERNORS MINIMUM COURSE REQUIREMENTS REMAINING for courses that received PC19 or WC19 codes.

To alleviate the discovered transcript issues, and prevent teachers from utilizing these codes after the 2019-2020 school year, all PSUs who entered the codes in their NC 10-Point Grade Special Codes Scale should follow the steps in the Post COVID-19 Special Code Scale Update QRD and update their Grade Scale to correctly reflect grading options moving forward and prevent transcript display issues for students who received PC19/WC19 codes.

The setup of these codes should not change per the initial setup described in the COVID-19 Pass/Withdraw Codes QRD. Please ensure you have not unchecked Use As a Final Grade for both PC19 and WC19 codes, and Grad Credit should not be unchecked for PC19.

Reporting Deadline

2020-2021 Instructional School Start and End Dates

G.S. 115C-84.2(a2) specifies that a report on the start and end dates of the instructional calendar for students for the next academic year be provided to the Superintendent of Public Instruction and the State Board of education by April 1 of each year.  To make this deadline, the start and end dates of the instructional calendar for students for each school must be in PowerSchool before April 1.

School Start and End Dates for 2021-22 will be pulled immediately after April 1, 2021.

Reminder:  Use of Emojis in PowerTeacher Pro

The Transfer Student Record process fails when emojis are included in teacher comments.  A ticket has been submitted to PowerSchool requesting a fix to allow the use of emojis for future versions.  In the meantime, please request teachers to refrain from using emojis in final grade comments when using the PowerTeacher Pro gradebook.

Culturally Relevant Spring 2021 Curriculum Team Intensive

“The paradox of education is precisely this - that as one begins to become conscious, one begins to examine the society in which he/she is being educated.” -James Baldwin

Are you part of a team that is interrogating your curriculum for opportunities to be culturally relevant, responsive and sustaining? Join other educators across NC to build the capacity of your team and your resources.

The NC Department of Public Instruction and its GoOpenNC platform is facilitating a Culturally Relevant Teaching (CRT) Intensive that engages educators on a cultural and identity reflection with direct application to curriculum resources.

Participants will engage alongside state and national facilitators in a nine-week webinar series that explores competencies of CRT and integrates these competencies into curriculum resources that can be openly shared across the state of NC. Read more here about the schedule, facilitators, and community.

Participants are encouraged to register and participate with a group of educators in their school or district within a common content area to increase their capacity at their local level. Educator teams will bring a curricular resource to workshop throughout the Intensive and share openly with other participants across NC using the GoOpenNC platform. Team members will be eligible to earn 1.2 CEUs in Digital Learning and 1.0 CEUs in Content Area.
