The NC Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) document StrongSchoolsNC Public Health Toolkit (K-12) Interim Guidance which was most recently updated on December 4, 2020 addresses more current research being done in the field regarding the transmission of aerosols during performing arts, recess, and physical activities in their Requirements and Recommendations for Recess, Specials, and General Activities Supplement. |
We support the guidance in the NC DHHS Requirements and Recommendations for Recess, Specials, and General Activities Supplement, especially regarding the recommendations that schools:
- Ensure that all visitors, students, and teachers (ages 5 and up) wear a cloth face covering and consider the additional use of plastic face shields.
- Build in time at the beginning and end of lessons to ensure the proper cleaning and disinfection of instruments, props, shared equipment, and classrooms with the least possible impact on instruction.
- Conduct rehearsals/performances in open-air theaters or outside on fields/playgrounds to maintain at least six (6) feet of social distancing and ventilation, whenever possible.
- If rehearsals/performances are inside, maximize distance between performers, listeners, (also consider the conductor) by performing in larger venues, while meeting any applicable mass gathering limits for that venue and ensuring proper ventilation.
In addition to the requirements and recommendations set forth by the NC DHHS, we urge arts leaders to take the time to learn more about this study by visiting the NFHS Study Website. You can also find many answers on their FAQ page. Given the ever-evolving nature of the findings from multiple aerosol studies, we highly recommend keeping abreast of the current research, especially from the previously mentioned NFHS Study, along with the Colorado State University Aerosol Study (most recently released findings on December 2, 2020).

We know that all schools have different schedules, so sign up for one session, two sessions, one day, or both. It’s a free event, and all are welcome. All sessions will be recorded so you can go on a field trip next year as well.
The holidays are quickly approaching and we would like to continue our beloved seasonal tradition where school groups share their favorite music, dance and art, with NCDPI staff, friends, and family. This year, we want to showcase the best and brightest of our student artists online by asking school groups to provide *recorded* performances and art galleries that we can schedule to livestream on the NCDPI Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/NCPublicSchools. We encourage your school group to share dance, choral and band performances as well as visual art galleries.
Please try to keep these things in mind: • 3-10 minute performance length (Generally 1-3 awesome songs) • Student song introductions are very impactful.
• VISUAL ART galleries should be in Google Slide Decks with one student's artwork, their name, and their grade level. You can share the link in the application. • The performance should reflect the NC Arts Education Essential Standards. Highlighting the standards in the performance also makes a huge impact! • Represent the diversity of the students in our state/your school • Performances are limited and scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis • We love to celebrate you and your administrators for supporting Arts Education in the state. Feel free to feature them! • We will livestream your performance at 11:30am on the appointed day
Rolling applications will be accepted at https://bit.ly/3nBzxbj to be featured throughout the month of December!

The Scientific Mime - "What's Up With Gravity?"
Sheila Kerrigan performs "The Scientific Mime, or, What’s Up With Gravity?”-- a show for 2nd-5th graders about Physical Science.
Science is full of abstract words and invisible forces that are hard for young people to grasp. But once you’ve seen The Mime Who Talks struggling against gravity, pushes, pulls, and other forces, they become real. Audience interaction, and belly laughs, included.
"What’s Up With Gravity?" connects directly to Essential Standards in Physical Science (Forces and Motion) for 2nd-5th grades. It makes abstract forces—like gravity, inertia, & sound waves—visible through mime. The audience participates by reading aloud signs that state the scientific concepts and by doing gestures for key vocabulary. Students SEE the mime illustrate the concept, SAY the concept, and attach movement (DO) to key vocabulary. It’s educational, participatory, silly, and a lot of fun!
Sheila is videotaping short segments from the show for teachers to use as engaging introductions to each unit. Here is one about force, push, and pull.

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education
In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
