The holidays are quickly approaching and we would like to continue our beloved seasonal tradition where school groups share their favorite music, dance and art, with NCDPI staff, friends, and family. This year, we want to showcase the best and brightest of our student artists online by asking school groups to provide *recorded* performances and art galleries that we can schedule to livestream on the NCDPI Facebook page - https://www.facebook.com/NCPublicSchools. We encourage your school group to share dance, choral and band performances as well as visual art galleries.
Please try to keep these things in mind: • 3-10 minute performance length (Generally 1-3 awesome songs) • Student song introductions are very impactful.
• VISUAL ART galleries should be in Google Slide Decks with one student's artwork, their name, and their grade level. You can share the link in the application. • The performance should reflect the NC Arts Education Essential Standards. Highlighting the standards in the performance also makes a huge impact! • Represent the diversity of the students in our state/your school • Performances are limited and scheduled on a first-come-first-served basis • We love to celebrate you and your administrators for supporting Arts Education in the state. Feel free to feature them! • We will livestream your performance at 11:30am on the appointed day
Rolling applications will be accepted at https://bit.ly/3nBzxbj to be featured throughout the month of December!

What Moves You?
Black Box Dance Theatre is a Raleigh, NC modern dance company. We make sense of the world through movement. We curate stories and ideas of the human experience and translate them through the body. We move and share non-fiction stories of extraordinary people…like you.
According to new research, the ability to dance may have been a factor in survival for our prehistoric ancestors who used their moves to bond and communicate with each other when times were tough. Join Black Box Dance Theatre on a tour of the North Carolina Museum of Art as they make and perform a new dance inspired by “What Moves You”. Ask your students to complete the google form https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSdVozdsdjqSnn5occeGnJcgIy7Waxy8tW-lbn20O5xjV6D7Yg/viewform?usp=sf_link to give input on the BLACK BOX Dance session at the upcoming ARTS LIVE conference.
This Saturday, December 5 at 10:30 am, the museum will present a digital performance of Mike Wiley's play, Fire of Freedom. The play tells the story of Abraham Galloway. The free program will conclude with a live Q&A with Mike Wiley and historian David Cecelski. Cecelski, wrote the book Fire of Freedom, upon which the play is based.
Educators, students, and families will all enjoy watching this performance. To register for this free event, visit https://www.ncmuseumofhistory.org/events/fire-freedom-abraham-galloway .

In case you aren't familiar with Abraham Galloway (1837 - 1870), he was a rebel, radical abolitionist, and Union spy who rose out of bondage to become one of the South’s most significant Black leaders. Having fought slavery and injustice, he risked his life during America’s Civil War to recruit Black soldiers for the North, then fought racism in the Union army. He also stood at the forefront of an African American political movement, leading a delegation of black southerners to the White House for a meeting with President Abraham Lincoln and, later, becoming one of the first Black men elected to North Carolina’s state legislature.

T. S. Monk: Monk on Monk
Friday, December 11, 7 pm
North Carolina native Thelonious Monk was one of the world’s greatest jazz pianists. Hailed as the “High Priest of Bebop” and a founding father of modern jazz, his music continues to influence musicians today. In this concert, his son, Thelonious Sphere “T. S.” Monk III, carries on his father’s legacy. Whether performing newly discovered compositions or legendary family songs, the music is overpowering, swinging, and timeless.
