Charter Schools Advisory Board (CSAB) November Meeting

The North Carolina Charter Schools Advisory Board met remotely on November 9-10, 2020.

Meeting agendas are available on the State Board of Education’s website under the Meetings tab. There you can also find presentation materials for each agenda item, where applicable.

The NC Charter Schools Advisory Board meetings are live-streamed and available on the NCDPI YouTube Channel.

2020 Application Cycle Updates

The CSAB heard from six first-round interview schools preparing to open in 2022: Triad Math and Science Academy Company; The Soaring Eagle Academy; Impact Leadership Academy; Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy; American Leadership Academy and Great Opportunities Boarding Institute for Girls (GO BIG). Triad Math and Science Academy will be forwarded to SBE and recommended for Ready to Open status. Bonnie Cone Leadership Academy (Charter One) and American Leadership Academy (Charter One) and Great Opportunities Boarding Institute for Girls (GO BIG) were recommended for second-round interviews.  The Soaring Eagle Academy and Impact Leadership Academy will be advanced to SBE for denial.  The CSAB also heard from two second-round interview schools: Power Elite Male Academy and Central Carolina Academy. Power Elite Male Academy will be advanced to SBE for denial. Central Carolina Academy will be forwarded to SBE and recommended for Ready to Open status.

Accelerated application recommendations will be heard by the SBE at its December 2-3 meeting. All other applications (regular timeline) will be heard by the SBE in 2021 once CSAB has finished its review and recommendations.

 

Amendments

CSAB recommended approval of four weighted lottery requests. CSAB also recommended approval of a second one-year delay for Wake Preparatory Academy. Aristotle Preparatory Academy’s request to partner with EMO Charter One is tabled until next month pending receipt of additional information.

 

Renewals – Cohort 2021

CSAB received the 2021 Renewal Cohort Financial Report from Ms. Alexis Schauss, DPI. In addition, CSAB heard from four schools up for renewal – Coastal Preparatory Academy, GLOW, Iredell Charter Academy, and Success Institute Charter. Renewal interviews and discussion will continue through January 2021.

 

Upcoming CSAB Meetings

Remote meetings will take place December 7-8, 2020. CSAB agendas are posted one week prior to the meeting on Eboard.
