Supporting Learning Differences in Arts Education Professional Development Webinar Banner

ELs, EC, AIG, IEPs, 504s, SIOP, MTSS, and More Acronyms!

Public school arts programs are places where students transcend their other labels and work across grades, programs, and classes to create together. However, it is still imperative to understand the structures that are designed to support all of their learning in all K-12 classrooms. Whether virtual, blended, or in-person, Arts Educators often have students who represent the entire spectrum of learners. Join us as we explore ways that we, as arts educators, can implement tried and true supports for learning differences of all varieties.

This series will include:

  • Virtual Tools for Supporting Learning Differences
  • MTSS (Multi-Tiered System of Supports) for Arts Educators: What does it mean for me?
  • SIOP (Sheltered Instruction Observation Protocol) For English Learners in Arts Education
  • Sensory Friendly Classrooms and Concerts
  • Visual Literacy for All Learners with the NC Museum of Art
  • More to Come! (Tell us what you need!)

What We Keep Keeps Us

NC Poet Laureate Jaki Shelton Green will be doing workshops on both days, December 15 and 16.

Day 1- I will be facilitating a writing exercise, What We Keep Keeps Us, for teachers and students. Participants will introduce themselves via something special or meaningful that they keep.

Whatever they introduce themselves with will then write about the person instead of the participant writing about the object or artifact.

Day 2- Teachers and students will share as community or gather in breakout rooms on Zoom and share the writing they create if it is a large group to ensure that we honor everyone’s voices.

Collaborate with NC Muralist Rosalia Torres-Weiner

NC Muralist Roalia Torres-Weiner will be taking your prompts and input as she creates a mural LIVE during the conference. Also, join her with your students on a session about What To Do When You Are Stuck!

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education

In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
