Project EnACTeD at UNCG

With the increasing number of multilingual learners in North Carolina, many teachers are looking for professional development (PD) that offers well-organized and research-based resources, along with collaborative opportunities with educators across disciplinary areas, in a flexible, accessible, and self-paced format that can fit in teachers’ busy day-to-day work schedule. Project EnACTeD (Engaging and Advancing Community-Centered Teacher Development) at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro (UNCG) is a collaborative teacher development program funded by the US Department of Education National Professional Development (NPD) grant. Project EnACTeD aims at creating online learning spaces for North Carolina teachers. By design, Project EnACTeD works to support the growing number of DL/I programs in North Carolina, especially two-way immersion programs that involve native speakers of the DL/I program language who may be English Learners (ELs).

The PD and all add-on licensure courses are offered fully online through the Canvas platform. For many educators, the online program makes it possible for them to participate in the learning community. As one program completer commented, “it was invaluable to be able to participate in an online remote learning program as I do not live locally. Without the opportunity to participate remotely, so many of us would not have been able to take advantage of the program.” Teachers are prepared to take the Praxis II exam required for the NC K-12 ESL licensure. Project EnACTeD reimburses the Praxis testing fee and add-on licensure application fee for all eligible participants.
