Charter Schools Advisory Board (CSAB) October Meeting

The North Carolina Charter Schools Advisory Board met remotely on Monday, October 12th & Tuesday, October 13th, 2020.

Meeting agendas are available on the State Board of Education’s website under the Meetings tab. There you can also find presentation materials for each agenda item, where applicable.

The NC Charter Schools Advisory Board meetings are live-streamed and available on the NCDPI YouTube Channel.

2020 Renewals Report

Renewals:

Dr. Shaunda Cooper presented the annual Charter Schools Renewals Report. The renewal site has abundant information on the renewal schools. https://sites.google.com/view/nccharterrenewal/renewal-schools

 

There are 18 schools up for renewal this year; those who were not recommended for a 10 year renewal  will return to CSAB in November. A detailed financial report will also be presented next month. The preliminary renewal recommendations moving forward to the NC SBE are: 

 

10 Year Renewal:  The Hawbridge School, Global Scholars Academy, Mallard Creek STEM Academy, Matthews Charter, PEAK Charter, Pine Springs Preparatory Academy

 

7 Year Renewal:  Healthy Start Academy and Union Prep at Indian Trail

 

5 Year Renewal:  Fernleaf Community School, Concord Lake  STEAM, Gate City Charter, Union Day, Unity Classical

 

3 Year Renewal:  Iredell Charter Academy, Girls Leadership Academy of Wilmington (GLOW), Coastal Preparatory Academy, Success Institute

 

Central Wake High School was also up for renewal but uses the Alternative Accountability Model. 

 

 

 

 

Charter Application Interviews

CSAB interviewed several charter school applicants (both regular timeline and acceleration applicants) during its October meeting:

 

  • BEAM Academy, regular timeline, was not moved forward to approved/ Ready to Open status
  • Power Elite Male Academy, regular timeline, was moved to a second round interview in Nov. 
  • New Generation Charter Academy, regular timeline, was not moved forward to approved/Ready to Open status
  • Heritage Collegiate Leadership Academy, regular timeline, was not moved forward to approved/ready to Open status
  • Central Carolina Charter Academy, regular timeline, was moved to a second round interview in Nov.
  • Old Main Stream, acceleration applicant, was moved forward to Ready to Open status
  • School of the Arts for Boys Academy (SABA), acceleration applicant, was moved forward to Ready to Open status
  • Faith Academy, acceleration applicant, was moved forward to Ready to Open status

 

 

 

 

Amendments

  • Torchlight Academy requested an amendment to implement a weighted lottery
  • Elaine Riddick Charter School, currently in a delay year, requested an amendment to implement a weighted lottery
  • Triangle Math & Science Academy requested an amendment to implement a weighted lottery
  • Two Rivers Charter School requested an amendment to implement a weighted lottery
  • Doral Academy, currently in a delay year, requested an amendment to relocate to Wake County

All requested amendments passed
