Governor Roy Cooper has signed Senate Bill 681 into law which, among other things, creates an Arts High School Graduation Requirement in North Carolina. Arts NC has been working for this vital arts education legislation for over a decade and we are incredibly excited for this major breakthrough for equitable access to quality arts instruction as part of a well-rounded education for every North Carolina student. Now, according to NC State Law:
- A student must complete ONE arts credit (music, visual art, theatre arts, dance) between Grade 6 and Grade 12 in order to graduate from high school, beginning with those students entering Grade 6 in 2022.
- The NC State Board of Education will define the standards of the arts credit and to plan for its phased-in implementation.
- The NC State Board of Education would report to the Joint Legislative Oversight Committee on or before December 15, 2022 about the implementation of this high school graduation requirement and of the three components of Comprehensive Arts Education (arts education, arts integration, and arts exposure)

When Life Gives You Lemons...
In the feedback surveys from the June "Afternoon Pick-Me-Up" PLCs, there was a strong call for platform-specific PLCs: Google Classroom, Canvas, Flipgrid, Google Sites, Google Meet, Zoom, etc, so that teachers can discuss their ideas, successes, and challenges when facing blended or remote learning in the 2020-2021 school year. The NCDPI Arts Ed team will be able to more deeply explore how specific these platforms can be best utilized to support the dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts standards in meaningful remote learning.
Come ready with:
- a cup of lemonade (or your favorite iced beverage)
- your questions
- a successful lesson you taught on the specified platform (if applicable)
Links For Other Sessions Will Be Available Soon!
Please note: If you feel you have expertise that you would like to share in one (or more) of these platforms and are interested in helping to facilitate these sessions, please contact Sayward Grindley.

For the past three months, the COVID-19 crisis has caused massive disruptions in every corner of our society. Schools have been heavily impacted, some closing for the year, and others transitioning to Emergency Remote Learning.
As we close one school year and begin to plan for the next, we still do not know what that year will have in store for us. We may be back to school face-to-face with a new normal. We may be online. We may use some combination of these models at different points during the school year. The process of preparing for all of these possibilities can seem overwhelming.
Whether you have been teaching remotely for three months, or are just getting started -- Remote Learning at the beginning of the school year is going to be a new experience for all of us.
Registration is still open if you have colleagues who would like to participate. Registration will remain open through August 1

Kick Off with Internationally Known Teaching Artist, Author Eric Booth
Tuesday, July 14th 3 - 4:30 pm
Teaching Artist Tuesdays is an online bi-weekly workshop, curated and facilitated by Sharon Hill, Arts Education Director for North Carolina Arts Council with co-facilitator Lenora Helm Hammonds, Director of North Carolina Central University Teaching Artist Certificate Program.
The TAT series will serve as a blueprint for North Carolina’s Teaching Artists as they circumnavigate the COVID 19 landscape.
The effects of COVID 19 have changed the field of teaching artistry dramatically. As educators struggle to define the parameters for safe instruction, artists must be prepared to offer their talents to students in new ways. Approaches to teaching artistry may include the development of online content, strategies for social distancing and safeguards for healthy practices in hybrid situations, and a consciousness of the social emotional needs of students.
Through a series of online discussions, presentations, and resources, teaching artists will expand their knowledge of the field and gain strategies and skills to move forward in the current COVID landscape.
FREE and open to all teaching artists in NC, and those interested in entering the field of teaching artistry.
