NC School Board Call for Action to Eliminate Inequities and Racism

SBOE Seal

“This will take more than being empathetic to those who suffer under these inequities and racism, it will take intentional, determined, relentless commitment and work from all, especially those of us who are white and in positions of power and leadership, to end this societal pandemic. Our children’s education, their future and our future with them, depends on it.” N.C. State Board of Education Chairman Eric Davis

Share Your Silver Lining Stories!

Silver Linings

Remote Learning Silver Lining Stories is a platform for our arts educators to share brief narratives and visual images about the innovative ways students are learning online during the COVID-19 pandemic. These stories can be about everything from engaging projects and creative ways you are using online technology in teaching your content to how the arts are helping support the social and emotional needs of your students. NCDPI Arts Education will share these stories via social media, therefore we will need a media release for any student likeness.

Remote Learning Silver Lining Stories submission should:

1. Be submitted online using the form below.

Narratives or Visuals (pictures and/or video) may include:

· creative new ways you are using online technology to teach the arts;

· how the arts are helping to support the social and emotional needs of your students;

2. Be no more than 250 words.

3. Include one photograph, video or audio file that represents the story (if possible).

4. Be written in a positive tone, even if you are describing an obstacle or challenge.

5. Highlight those that are impacted and those involved (students, colleagues and administrators).

The Remote Learning Silver Lining Stories submissions will:

• Be reviewed (and possibly edited slightly) by NCDPI Arts Ed staff before posting on the NCDPI Arts Ed website and social media;

• Be posted with media files if available (please be sure photo rights are obtained and necessary credits submitted with the image);

Remote Learning Silver Lining Stories enable our educators to share with each other and the larger North Carolina arts education community the many ways we can deliver excellent standards-driven instruction for our students during this challenging time.

FYI: 53 National Organizations to Support Arts Education as Essential for Students during COVID-19 Pandemic

AIE Unified Statement

The following is an excerpt from NAfME's Press release:

In the statement, “Arts Education Is Essential,” the signing organizations convey that the arts have already played a pivotal and uplifting role during the health crisis, and that arts education can help all students, including those who are in traditionally underrepresented groups, as students return to school next year.

Arts Education Is Essential” speaks to arts education’s role in supporting the social and emotional well-being of students, an area that administrators, educators, and parents have highlighted as essential to student safety and success during the pandemic and as students return to school, whether in-person, online, or in a blended fashion, this fall. Arts education also creates a welcoming school environment and a healthy and inclusive school community, helping students, educators, parents, and the community at large build and strengthen their connectedness during this time of social isolation and social distancing.

The statement also reminds the public that arts education is a part of a well-rounded education as defined by the federal education law, the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), and supported in state laws throughout the country. Forty-six states require an arts credit to receive a high school diploma, and 43 states have instructional requirements in the arts in elementary and secondary schools.

North Carolina's Vision for Comprehensive Arts Education

In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
