Survey on Common Core Shows an Overwhelming Number of North Carolinians Want it Out of Public Schools

Last week, Superintendent Mark Johnson sent a survey to parents and teachers seeking greater engagement and feedback on improving state standards. More than 71,000 people completed the survey with over 78% indicating that they want NC to remove Common Core from its state standards.

Superintendent Johnson said the results of the survey clearly demonstrate how important the issue is in North Carolina.

“These results affirm what I have been hearing across the state for years. Most North Carolinians do not want Common Core used in our public schools,” said Johnson.  “There is a path forward, and we are carefully reviewing the process followed by the Florida Department of Education to ensure any review of standards dedicates sufficient time for diligent review and includes the views of all stakeholders. I think it is well past time that education leaders in Raleigh listen to all educators and parents on this important issue.

The revision process of North Carolina’s state standards conducted in 2017 used the Common Core standards as the starting point. Some revisions were made and the name was changed, but Common Core is still in North Carolina’s standards.
