Join SEADAE (State Education Agency Directors of Arts Education) for its national conference, The Arts & Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): A Synergistic Pairing, September 24-26, 2020.
Taking place over 2.5 days in Delaware’s scenic Brandywine Valley region, this conference will explore relevant intersections between SEL competencies and learning in and through the arts, while offering a meaningful platform for the arts education community to be involved in the national SEL dialogue. It aims to bring together a diverse group of arts as well as non-arts professionals and practitioners – including those from the fields of neuroscience, policy administration, higher education, and behavioral development. With sessions held at the University of Delaware (Newark, DE) and at nearby Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library, The Arts & SEL promises to be an immersive, stimulating, and enriching learning experience for all.
“SEADAE is thrilled to have the opportunity to come to Delaware to host its national conference,” says SEADAE President Dale Schmid. “Delaware has taken a lead nationally in highlighting the importance of fostering the social and emotional competence of young learners and embracing socially responsible, trauma informed instruction.”
The Arts & SEL: A Synergistic Pairing represents the culmination of a year-long professional learning project for SEADAE, made possible with support from the National Endowment for the Arts. The conference will be presented in partnership with Young Audiences Arts for Learning and Little Kids Rock.

NOTIFICATIONS MADE BY: MAY 1, 2020
WAAE 2020 SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
SUBMISSION PORTAL IS OPEN UNTIL MARCH 20, 2020
About the Summit
The impact of the arts and arts education is wide and significant. As a global arts education community, we seek to know the impact of our work in the many contexts in which it manifests. Assessment and evaluation of the impact of arts learning and arts programming involves complex and valuable processes that are shaped by the contexts in which arts education takes place. From design to implementation to analysis, unveiling the impact of our work is achieved in multiple ways – through various designs, models, and practices.
This Summit brings together artist-educators and advocates from across the world to network, share research, and examine quality structures, processes, and practices. Artist-educators and arts program directors strive to ensure that arts assessment and program evaluation is intentional, well designed, and yields quality information that is analyzed and translated effectively into practices that improve arts learning and impact on students, audiences, and communities. This summit will bring together a host of international experts to share and discuss evidence-based practices aimed at measuring impact of arts learning and arts programming.

The NC Symphony in Jones County: Here’s how music is giving students hope after a hurricane.
Hurricane Florence hit Jones County, and other counties across eastern North Carolina, in fall 2018. The town of Pollocksville was under water. Two schools were lost.
Through creative funding and a public-private partnership, a state-of-the-art preK-12 school opened in Jones County in fall 2019. It’s the district’s first new school in nearly 50 years, replacing the elementary and middle schools ruined by the storm.
In November, a three-year residency of the North Carolina Symphony kicked off with an education concert — the district’s first-ever symphony concert in its elementary students’ first-ever gymnasium.
“All children are musical and deserve to have that in their lives,” said Mary Tillery, the district’s music teacher at all four of its elementary schools.
Watch the video and read more to follow the district over four months of recovery, learning, and celebration.

In today's globally competitive world, innovative thinking and creativity are essential for all school children. High quality, standards-based instruction in the arts develops these skills and effectively engages, retains, and prepares future-ready students for graduation and success in an entrepreneurial economy. Dance, music, theatre arts, and visual arts, taught by licensed arts educators and integrated throughout the curriculum, are critical to North Carolina's 21st century education.
