Looking Ahead Toward a Joyous New Year

As 2019 begins to wind down, it's a good time to reflect on the hard work and dedication of amazing educators throughout North Carolina. Schools across the state have created cultures that foster STEM education. From student designing opportunities to community connections, intentional practices have facilitated the best STEM opportunities for our K-12 students.

With appreciation for your time and commitment all through the year, please be sure to spend time with those who mean most to you during the upcoming holidays. Life is valuable and we should never take it for granted!

Best wishes for a prosperous 2020!

Calling All STEM Reviewers!!

Your Support is Greatly Appreciated

Model STEM School of Distinction

The 2019-2020 North Carolina STEM Schools of Distinction Recognition Program is underway. With over 50 schools across the state having communicated their Intent to be recognized as a leading STEM program in North Carolina, we are asking those STEM educational leaders, who have familiarity with the STEM Schools of Distinction process, to assist with the Review of this year's applications.

Individuals presently leading within a NC recognized STEM school, or any individuals who have served as past SSoD reviewers, are asked to provide updated contact information by completing this Reviewer Application by December 13th.

There will be a required Leader training meeting on January 10th for those selected to participate. The applications will be shared immediately following the January 31st deadline and then reviewers would have about 2 weeks to complete their review before the face to face meeting.  More information will be shared in the coming weeks with applicants.

Purple Star Designation

PURPLE STAR SCHOOLS

Purple Star Schools are schools that show a major commitment to students and families connected to our nation’s military. Several states already have the Purple Star designation process in place. As a military-friendly state with several major military installations and many military-connected children, to include children of Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and veterans, across the state, this will be a valuable identifier for our state’s military-friendly schools. The Purple Star School designation will be awarded through an application and review process. Please watch the video to learn a little more about this award designation.

In recent months, many have shown patience with accessing up-to-date information regarding STEM in North Carolina. Documents related to the STEM Schools of Distinction program, current recognized schools, and other related documents can now be found on DPI's newly published STEM webpages .

Many thanks for the understanding that has been shown across the state as this opportunity to standardize the broad range of NC governmental websites nears completion. Should you wish to explore the entire site, go to www.dpi.nc.gov from your browser on any device.
