2019 Charter School Applications

The Charter Schools Advisory Board began reviewing the 2019 Charter School Applications at its September meeting. A total of nineteen applications were submitted, five Fast-Track/Accelerations (to open in Fall 2020) and fourteen Traditional timeline applications (to open in Fall 2021).

Six applications were submitted for schools in Mecklenburg County and two were submitted to open in Guilford County. Bladen, Buncombe, Chatham, Columbus, Edgecombe, Greene, Pitt, Robeson, Scotland, and Wake each had one application submitted to locate there.

Accelerated applicant recommendations were forwarded to the State Board of Education (SBE) last month. The SBE will vote on those recommendations at its December meeting.

At the November meeting, CSAB completed the remaining eight clarification interviews for traditional timeline applicants. At the December meeting, CSAB will begin to hear the nine applicants selected for full interviews on a traditional timeline. All nine interviews will most likely be completed by the February 2020 CSAB meeting and recommendations for all traditional timeline applicants forwarded to the SBE.

November Presentations

In addition to clarification interviews, CSAB heard presentations from NC Cyber Academy and Charlotte Choice. The Office of Charter Schools presented the 2018-19 Academic Review and several amendment requests were heard and recommended for approval by the SBE. Counsel for the SBE, Mr. Eric Snider, presented an update on the rules-making process and Mr. Karl Pond, NC DPI Enterprise Data Manager, led a discussion on calculating economically disadvantaged populations in charter schools.

Renewals

All 2020 renewal schools that did not meet the ten-year renewal term requirements set by statute appeared for interviews at the November meeting. CSAB will discuss and make recommendations for renewal terms at the upcoming December meeting and those recommendations will be forwarded to the SBE for approval.

Recognition

The CSAB recognized Lincoln Charter School’s Athletic Program for outstanding sportsmanship and leadership.
