Board Changes

The Charter Schools Advisory Board is excited to announce two new members: Jeannette Butterworth of Henderson County and Joel Ford of Mecklenburg County. Both Ms. Butterworth and Mr. Ford participated in the charter school application process that began at this meeting.

Ms. Phyllis Gibbs has resigned from the CSAB. The CSAB recognized her service and contributions to the board and wish her well.

2019 Charter School Applications

The Charter Schools Advisory Board began reviewing the 2019 Charter School Applications at its September meeting. A total of nineteen applications were submitted, five Fast-Track/Accelerations (to open in Fall 2020) and fourteen Traditional timeline applications (to open in Fall 2021).

Six applications were submitted for schools in Mecklenburg County and two were submitted to open in Guilford County. Bladen, Buncombe, Chatham, Columbus, Edgecombe, Greene, Pitt, Robeson, Scotland, and Wake each had one application submitted to locate there.

At the September meeting, CSAB conducted the five fast-track/acceleration clarification interviews. Clarification interviews are thirty minutes and allow the CSAB to ask clarifying questions about the application before voting on whether to forward the applicant to the full interview. Three of the five applicants were forwarded to full interviews which will take place at the October CSAB meeting.

At the upcoming October meeting, CSAB will hear six clarification interviews in addition to the three full interviews.

September Presentations

In addition to clarification interviews, CSAB heard presentations from NC Cyber Academy and Essie Mae Kiser Foxx Charter School. The Office of Charter Schools presented a Renewal Season Introduction, Ready-to-Open Report, and the 2018 Performance Framework Report.

Recognition

The CSAB recognized Mrs. Heather Futrell of East Wake Academy for outstanding teaching and service. It was a pleasure hearing from one of the many dedicated charter school teachers.
