Scheduling NC Mathematics Courses

Webinar

Tuesday, December 10, 2019

3:00 PM - 4:00 PM

NCDPI mathematics consultants along with school counseling consultant, Cynthia Floyd, will discuss the new and revised 4th level mathematics courses, changes to course codes, and the Mathematics Options Chart. In August 2019, the State Board of Education approved the standards for a revised Precalculus course, revised and renamed Discrete Mathematics for Computer Science, and the new NC Math 4 course. This approval will lead to updates of the mathematics course codes and the Mathematics Options Chart. During this session we will also discuss changes to math credits for CTE courses and other important changes. Note that Individual participants must login to the webinar to receive the certificate of participation.

Career and College Ready Graduates (CCRG)

The CCRG legislation requires that “the State Board of Community Colleges, in consultation with the State Board of Education, shall develop a program... that introduces the college developmental mathematics and developmental reading and English curriculums in the high school senior year and provides opportunities for college remediation for students prior to high school graduation through cooperation with community college partners.”    An extension was received in summer of 2018 to support further development and implementation, with a statewide implementation requirement in the 2020-21 school year.

Our teams have been working diligently to design a statewide strategy that supports each of our local institutions and educators in this innovative opportunity to enhance post-secondary readiness for students across North Carolina.

Timeline:

  • Begin Phase 1 in Spring 2020 with a small number of schools aligned to NCCCS RISE program
  • Statewide Implementation in 2020-21, pending funding for platform

Information meetings for school system teams and conducted by the NC Community College System are being held across the state.  Please visit this page to access the flyer for the trainings, FAQ from DPI,  feedback form, and link to the CCS page where the final versions of the presentations will be posted. NCDPI has advocated for us much flexibility at the district level as possible, for example, allowing students to cover content prior to the senior year with an integrated model, smart lunch, or modules outside of a course for the math content and allowing students to fulfill the English IV HS graduation requirement/UNC minimum course requirement through an integrated model.

As we move into installation, we will continue to keep you updated with more details to help local districts, schools, and teachers know how to plan. Thank you for your dedicated partnership and collaboration in this effort to prepare students for post-secondary opportunities.
