Frida Kahlo, Diego Rivera, and Mexican Modernism at NCMA

Experience the lives, loves, and influence of two art icons of the 20th century. Few artists have captured the public's imagination with the force of Mexican painter Frida Kahlo (1907–54) and her husband, the Mexican painter and muralist Diego Rivera (1886–1957). The myths that surrounded them in their lifetime arose not only from their significant bodies of work, but also from their friendships (and conflicts) with leading political figures and their passionate, tempestuous personal relationships. Plan your visit to see this collection.

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Applications

The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) Program is an intensive overseas language and cultural immersion program for American students enrolled at U.S. colleges and universities. Students spend eight to ten weeks abroad studying one of 15 critical languages. The program includes intensive language instruction and structured cultural enrichment experiences designed to promote rapid language gains.

CLS, a program of the U.S. Department of State, is part of a wider government initiative to expand the number of Americans studying and mastering foreign languages that are critical to national security and economic prosperity. CLS plays an important role in preparing students for the 21st century's globalized workforce and increasing national competitiveness.

Most languages offered by the CLS Program do not require applicants to have any experience studying critical languages. The CLS Program seeks participants with diverse interests, and from a wide range of fields of study and career paths, with the purpose of representing the full diversity of the United States. Participants are selected based on their commitment to language learning and plans to apply their language skills to their future academic or professional pursuits. Please note that CLS is an intensive group-based language program. See the CLS website for details.

EUnited Teacher Fellows Program

UNC Global's Center for European Studies (CES) is offering the EUnited Teacher Fellows Program for K-12 teachers in North Carolina. Please see the description below and the additional details on the EUnited webpage.

The EUnited Teacher Fellows Program for K-12 North Carolina teachers is an 8-month program consisting of:

  • an opening orientation hosted at UNC on January 30 – February 1, 2020, that provides an intensive look at Europe, the European Union (EU) and the Transatlantic relationship.
  • two webinars where Fellows can touch base with each other and with CES faculty and staff.
  • an elective event chosen by the Fellow that fits their own interests on Europe and the EU, such as a lecture, conference, or workshop.
  • a closing conference hosted at UNC in August of 2020 that allows teachers to wrap-up their fellowship experience.

This EUnited Teacher Fellows Program aims to help teachers go deep with their knowledge of Europe and the European Union.

It offers CES the opportunity to accompany teachers on their learning journey, and create lasting relationships with engaged educators. It will allow teachers to find new ways to infuse EU content into their classrooms, and in turn increase young people’s understanding of Europe and the EU.

This program is free and the selected applicants will receive:

  • mileage reimbursement for trips to/from the Opening Orientation and Closing Conference
  • hotel accommodation and meals during the Opening Orientation and Closing Conference
  • materials packet, distributed during orientation
  • $500 stipend

The online application must be submitted by or before Friday, December 6, 2019.  Please see the additional details on the EUnited webpage. Questions can be directed to Allison Haskins at ahaskins@unc.edu.
