Message from Mr. Steven Walker, Vice Chair

We had another productive meeting of the Charter Schools Advisory Board in October. We are moving along quickly in the application cycle, having already completed the applications seeking to fast-track or accelerate. Congratulations to the schools that have been recommended for approval and, for those schools that were not, we hope to see an improved application next year! We are also starting our part of the renewal process.  As you know, the Office of Charter Schools and the renewal schools have been working on their end for well over a year on renewals.  We are looking forward to hearing from many of the renewal schools over the coming months.

2019 Charter School Applications

The Charter Schools Advisory Board began reviewing the 2019 Charter School Applications at its September meeting. A total of nineteen applications were submitted, five Fast-Track/Accelerations (to open in Fall 2020) and fourteen Traditional timeline applications (to open in Fall 2021).

Six applications were submitted for schools in Mecklenburg County and two were submitted to open in Guilford County. Bladen, Buncombe, Chatham, Columbus, Edgecombe, Greene, Pitt, Robeson, Scotland, and Wake each had one application submitted to locate there.

At the October meeting, CSAB conducted the six clarification interviews. Clarification interviews are thirty minutes and allow the CSAB to ask clarifying questions about the application before voting on whether to forward the applicant to the full interview. Five of the six applicants were forwarded to full interviews which will take place at a later CSAB meeting.

At the upcoming November meeting, CSAB will hear the eight remaining clarification interviews.
