Charter School check mark

Greetings from Ms. Lindalyn Kakadelis, CSAB Performance Committee Chair

Charter Leaders,

Congratulations, 2018-2019 school year is over!

Good job on finishing strong!  Teaching and motivating students to do their best, especially on the end of grade/course assessments, is not for the faint of heart.  Now is time to breathe a little easier, get some rest and evaluate for next year.

The June meeting of CSAB dealt mainly with reviewing the Ready to Open process with 14 new charter schools opening this year.  It is important these schools meet their projected or at least the break-even enrollment, have facility issues resolved, and have approved transportation and lunch plans.  As you know, that is just the beginning of what school leaders must do. Who said charters are not accountable?

Also this month, the State Board of Education (SBE) sent back two of the twelve applications CSAB approved for 2020-21 opening. Seems SBE received information not submitted by way of the Office of Charter Schools and CSAB.

The timeline for submitting information regarding the opening of charter schools is during the beginning of the application process, not when CSAB’s recommended applications are submitted to the State Board.  CSAB voted unanimously to stand by their votes taken earlier this year and support the timeline and protocol approved for charter applications.

We are looking forward to seeing many of you at our July meeting, when we come to the NC Association for Public Schools Conference in Cherokee. CSAB will be meeting on July 22, at the conference center.  Please come by and let’s catch up!

Thank you for your hard work making charter schools a GREAT option for families of North Carolina!

Amendments
