Person Early College Students Participate in Global Service-Learning Project

Person Early College for Innovation and Leadership (PECIL) students recently presented their Long Walk to Water Showcase. This is PECIL's first PBI Global Service Project.  The ninth graders and their teachers have been learning about the United Nations Global Sustainable Development Goal of Clean and Sanitary Water and how that impacts people everywhere. The students were informative to their audience, demonstrated great passion about the topic, and expressed care and concern about the plight of others. Several students participated in an interview with the Chancellor of NC State University and Dr. Hiller Spires of the Friday Institute's PBI Global Team. As a result of the service-learning project, students were able to donate 90 gallons of water to donate to the Christian Help Center and  $1000 to the Water For South Sudan to aid in the building of a well. As a school, PECIL will continue to take on the challenge of a Global Goal each year.

Governor's Educator Discovery Award

Looking for some funding for professional development you need to better support your career awareness and development ideas and activities? Educators across the state of North Carolina are encouraged to apply for cycle 2 of the Governor’s Educator Discovery Award for PreK-12 educators.

The award provides a stipend of up to $1,000 for preK-12 traditional public and public charter school educators to pursue a professional development experience of their choosing. Applicants will need to describe how their participation in the professional development experience will enhance their efforts to create a work-based learning activity for their students. Work-based learning includes engaging activities that provide career awareness, career exploration, and real-world career experience such as career fairs, worksite tours, service learning, apprenticeships, etc.

For more information, visit https://www.experiencemorenc.com/educator-discovery-award.

If you have any additional questions, contact latanya.pattillo@nc.gov . Note that although much of the language in the application references “teacher” and “teaching,” NC school counselors are included and eligible to apply (enter years as an educator/school counselor in experience question).
