Solar Power

NC GreenPower Solar Schools grant

The NC GreenPower Solar Schools grant offers up to $10,000 toward a solar educational project, complete with a weather station, real-time monitoring equipment, state-approved curriculum and training for teachers.

This hands-on learning package will enhance your students' education experience for years to come. Compare energy production of sunny days to rainy days, view the data from more than a dozen schools across the state and receive 6 hours towards CEU credits for our one-day teacher training.

With the help of the State Employees Credit Union Foundation's increased challenge grant, public schools who apply are eligible for an additional $15,000 in funding towards the total cost of the installation, including five years of operations and maintenance funds. Last year our schools had seven months to raise an average of $8,300 - and all were successful in record time.

E-Cigarette use by teens

We want to congratulate you for NC’s nearly two decades of success in promoting 100% tobacco free schools, which was the major driver in lowering cigarette smoking rates among NC middle and high school students to historic lows since 1999.

However, progress is slowing due to what the US Surgeon General recently called "the e-cigarette epidemic among youth." To learn more about what works to effectively protect young people from all forms of tobacco, including e-cigarettes, cigarettes, cigars and little cigars, and hookah, click on this resource from Ellen Essick, Section Chief, NC Healthy Schools and DPI.

North Carolina Family Code Night

Family Code Night is a whole-school family event that ignites coding and computer science learning at any elementary school, and in any family. The program uniquely engages children K-5 and their parents or guardians in the delightful experience of doing their first hour of computer programming together, in an early evening special school program. Family participation is a simple but profound innovation in this event – it changes the trajectory of a child’s computer-science learning, and the family’s appreciation and support for that learning. The result is a memorable school experience, a powerfully mobilized school community, and new family, social, and school momentum and direction to drive future computer science learning.

Local AIG plans due July 15; DPI technical assistance available

Each LEA’s Local AIG Plan is due to SBE/DPI by Monday, July 15, 2019 for review and comment. As Article 9B legislates, this updated plan should be approved by the LEA’s local board of education prior to submission and must be submitted every three years to SBE/DPI.

The NC AIG Program Standards (SBE Policy ACIG-000) serve as the guiding principles for the update of Local AIG Plans for 2019-2022. These standards provide a statewide framework while honoring local context and flexibility.

To support school districts and charter schools with the Local AIG Plan revision process, the Division of Advanced Learning and Gifted Education (DALGE) is hosting a series of webinars and is visiting AIG Regional meetings. Please encourage your AIG Coordinator to participate in these events and reach out to us if further support is needed. Contact Sneha Shah-Coltrane with questions.
