CCES

2019 Registration is now Open!

Early Bird Registration for the 2019 Connecting Communities of Education Stakeholders (CCES) is now open. Rates will increase on Feburary 15, 2019.

All teachers, student services personnel, principals, superintendents, parents, school administrators, community and business representatives are invited. The new registration options provide additional flexibility for schools and districts. Visit the Participant Registration webpage for more information.

Synergy conference

Synergy Conference 2019

 

The Synergy Conference 2019 for afterschool professionals will convene April 24-25, 2019 at the Koury Convention Center in Greensboro, NC. This year’s conference is themed “DOING THEM.O.S.T.: MAXIMIZING OUT-OF-SCHOOL TIME”.

Early Registration and the Request for Proposals (RFPs) for workshop presenters and vendors are now open. We are excited to announce that Mentoring has been added as a new workshop strand. Workshop strands include Arts & Literacy, Closing Gaps, College & Career Readiness, Mentoring, Organizational Capacity, Public/Private Partnerships, S.T.E.M., and Youth Development.

You can register here by February 10th for the discounted rate of $200. Regular registration will begin on February 11th at the regular rate of $225.

Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching (PAEMST)

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching

The National Science Foundation is currently accepting nominations and applications for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program. PAEMST is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 mathematics and science (including computer science) teaching. Since 1983, more than 4,800 teachers have been recognized for their contributions to mathematics and science education. Awardees serve as models to their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of mathematics and science education. Up to 108 awardees may be recognized each year.

The PAEMST program is open to outstanding STEM (including computer science) teachers in the 50 states; Washington, D.C.; the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; Department of Defense Education Activity schools; and the U.S. territories as a group. 

Anyone--principals, teachers, parents, students, or members of the general public--may nominate a teacher by completing the nomination form available on the PAEMST website. To submit a nomination, you will need the teacher’s name, email address, and school contact information. If you know more than one teacher deserving of this award, you may submit more than one nomination. Teachers may also apply directly at www.paemst.org

Presidential awardees receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States; a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities; and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation.The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on the behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The nomination deadline is March 1, 2019 and the application deadline is May 1, 2019, for secondary school teachers (grades 7-12). Elementary school teachers (grades K-6) will be eligible to apply during a future cycle.


emPowering STEM

Teacher nominations for the emPoweringSTEM Conference are needed ASAP!

 

Each district superintendent in North Carolina may nominate ONE middle school math, science, or STEM-related teacher to attend the emPoweringSTEM Conference in March.

There is a critical disconnect between the STEM skills needed to support the state’s current and future jobs ecosystem and our students’ interests and levels of mastery in those fields. By bringing together businesses leaders and educators from across North Carolina in a hands-on learning environment, this conference will help make that connection from classroom to career. This event was a partnership between GSK, NCBCE & Kenan Fellows and will enable over 100 of the state’s leading middle school educators to connect their classroom environments to career environments.

Participants will receive meals, a $50 travel stipend and – for those traveling more than 50 miles – lodging. There is also the opportunity to earn 1 CEU.

The conference will be held on March 25, 2019, at GSK Headquarters in Research Triangle Park.

Superintendents should send your teacher nominee’s name and email to ncbceadmin@nc.gov at NCBCE to receive further instructions on teacher registration. *If your LEA sent a teacher last year, we recommend you send a different teacher this year.

Supporting Students' Productive Struggles (Grades 6 - 12)

One-Day Workshop

Join us for this one-day workshop and take an initial dive into exploring productive struggle. Designed to begin the exploration of productive struggle through the lens of mathematics, the workshop supports the learning of teachers, coaches, and school- and district-based administrators. Though connected, each session addresses specific questions regarding the story of productive struggle in a mathematics classroom.
 
These questions will be addressed throughout the workshop:
  • What is productive struggle?
  • Why is productive struggle important to students' mathematics learning?
  • How do we support productive struggle for each and every student?
Key Ideas:
  • Institute content is based on the upcoming publication: Taking Action: Implementing Effective Mathematics Teaching Practices
  • There will be connections to Principles to Actions and the Effective Teaching Practices

Become a Computer Science Teacher

Did you know that there are Code.org professional learning workshops for teachers here in North Carolina? Applications are currently open for the 2019-20 Professional Learning Program for middle and high school teachers.
Here in North Carolina, there are over 14,000 open computing jobs. However, last year only 3,229 students took the AP Computer Science exam. Looking beyond jobs in tech, computer science opens up more opportunities than any other discipline and ensures students are well prepared for the future, no matter what field they pursue. All students deserve the opportunity to learn and it can start in your school — with you!
Designed to support middle and high school teachers before and during their first year teaching Computer Science Discoveries or Computer Science Principles, the Code.org Professional Learning Program begins with a five-day, in-person summer workshop followed by four additional sessions throughout the year. Best of all? No previous experience teaching computer science is needed.
Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis. We look forward to reviewing your application and to seeing you at a Code.org workshop soon!

Cost and Scholarship Information
The fee for the CS Discoveries and CS Principles year-long programs is $2,000 which includes 9 days of professional development, workshop materials, and eligible travel costs. We are able to make this available at 33% off the national cost thanks to generous contributions and support from Code.org and NC State University. 

For NC public school and public charter school teachers implementing CS Principles in 2019-20, scholarships are available to cover the total cost of the program, thanks to a partnership with the NC AP Partnership and the College Board.

We welcome elementary school teachers to sign up year-round for our no-cost, high-quality one-day professional development workshops for Computer Science Fundamentals courses from an experienced computer science facilitator.

Code.org's Facilitator Development Program is a highly-selective professional learning program designed to prepare and support facilitators to deliver quality workshops on Code.org's curriculum. We're looking to partner with enthusiastic educators to help deliver in-person workshops for CS Fundamentals, CS Discoveries, and CS Principles teachers in the 2019-2020 school year.

Forestry Opportunity

Calling All STEM Teachers!

The Sustainable Forestry Teachers Experience is a professional development workshop that demonstrates all elements of forestry in North Carolina. Discover the forests in our state, and learn about the wood products industry!

Experience Overview:

  •          Explore sustainable forestry practices and management techniques used in our state
  •          Go behind the scenes during field trips of industry facilities
  •          Tour forests and/or logging sites
  •          Participate in environmental education training
  •          Network with STEM educators across the state
  •          Connect with natural resource professionals in your community

Experience Perks:

  • Participants will receive resources and teaching materials to be used in the classroom/organization
  • All meals, lodging, and transportation at the conference will be provided for
  • Educators can earn continuing education credits (CEU) and EE certification (6 hours-Criteria I and 10 hours-Criteria III)

Experience Details:

  • Educators will apply online to the program. Accepted participants will have two weeks to pay a onetime registration fee of $50.
  • Workshop is geared towards formal and non-formal STEM professionals with emphasis on 3rd-12th grade science educators.
  • High School Teachers that lead topics aligned to Earth, Environmental, Biology and Agriculture will find our program most beneficial.
  • Registration for the program is first-come-first serve basis
  •  Max capacity for each workshop is 40 participants
