The 49th Annual Social Studies Conference will be taking place on Thursday, February 28th thru Friday, March 1st in Greensboro at the Koury Convention Center. The Theme for the conference is "Yesterday, Today, Tomorrow: Building the Future of Social Studies”.

The Connecting Communities of Education Stakeholders Conference (CCES): Calling for Proposals for Student Presentations
March 18-21, 2019 Sheraton Greensboro Hotel & Koury Convention Center

We are pleased to announce that the Conference Planning Committee is seeking proposals for student-led presentations for The Connecting Communities of Education Stakeholders Conference (CCES), formerly the Collaborative Conference for Student Achievement (CCSA).
Presenting at the CCES would be an excellent way for the stakeholders in North Carolina to see what and how students are:
- Creating
- Being Innovative
- Taking action
- Connecting to the community and
- Being empowered to be successful citizens, workers, and leaders
Students will have the opportunity to share some of their classroom experiences, projects, research, service-learning experiences, etc. with state stakeholders at the conference. If you are aware of students who could present on one of the goals and highlight practices that improve educational outcomes at the CCES conference on either March 18 or 19, 2019, please complete the Student Session Proposal Form.
Proposals must be submitted before January 20, 2019.

Register for the 2019 CCES Conference
- Early Bird Registration for the 2019 Connecting Communities of Education Stakeholders (CCES) conference is now opened and will continue through February 14, 2019. The registration rate will increase on February 15, 2019.
- All teachers, student services personnel, principals, superintendents, parents, school administrators, community and business representatives are invited. The new registration options provide additional flexibility for schools and districts. Visit the Participant Registration webpage for more information.

NCDPI and EVERFI Webinar on Financial Literacy
On February 12th at 3:30 PM, Phylisha Sanders (Department of Public Instruction) and Peter Kelpin (EVERFI) will be sharing useful information about financial resources, and their alignment to Social Studies Essential Standards. Participants will learn how to access the resources and how educators across the state are already implementing them in their schools!

EVERFI - Financial Literacy and Marketplaces (New for 2018 - 2019!) are web-based Personal Financial Literacy and Economics resources, available to North Carolina educators at no-cost! Available via the EVERFI platform, these lesson-based resources blend online learning with offline reinforcement to help students in High School develop critical mindsets, behaviors and skills around managing, growing, and using money.

Founding Principles Online Learning Opportunity
Did you know that there are 13 Founding Principles required by N.C. law to be taught in the American History: Founding Principles, Civics, and Economics course? Are you currently teaching all 13 of the “Principles” which have been identified by the N.C. General Assembly?
If you would like to learn more about the Founding Principles contained in the legislation and discuss some ways in which you might be able to make sure all of them are incorporated in your curriculum, consider taking the Founding Principles course in Canvas. You will earn 2.0 CEUs and reflect on some of the Founding Principles you may already be teaching as well as plan ways to integrate those you are not currently teaching. If interested, fill out this form. When asked the name of the course, put in “Founding Principles”. Registration ends Feb 1st. The course will run from Feb 4 – Mar 8. George Washington’s Mt. Vernon: Full Scholarships for NC teachers to attend Summer Institute
The George Washington Teacher Institute is seeking teachers who are committed to teaching with primary sources to apply for its Summer Residential Programs. This program is free for attendees, integrates top scholarship in history and civics with applicable classroom pedagogy and immersive experiences related to George Washington and the 18th century world he lived in. Special attention, during the 5-day program, is spent talking about the relevance of history and civics to student lives today. There are six different themes ranging across the topics of government, business, women’s history, leadership, slavery, and military history.
Applications are due January 14th.
The Institute would love to get more teachers from North Carolina, so be sure to apply today!

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Jerome H. Powell will host a town hall meeting with educators from across the country on February 6, 2019. The educators will join the Chairman at 7 p.m. EST in the Board Room of the Board's main building in Washington, D.C., and participate via webcast from Federal Reserve Bank offices throughout the country. The Chairman will respond to questions from both the in-person audience and participants at the Reserve Bank offices.
The event will be live streamed to the public at
www.federalreserve.gov and YouTube. Social media users can follow the Federal Reserve Board's Twitter feed at @FederalReserve and Facebook page at
https://www.facebook.com/federalreserve, and they may join the discussion about the event by using the hashtag: #FedTownHall. After the event, the Board will post a transcript and video recording on its website.

EVERFI Resources for Black History Month and Beyond
For Middle and High School Teachers across North Carolina, EVERFI offers 306 - African-American History an immersive and inspiring digital journey through American History. Through 14 lessons, starting in the era of Slavery, moving through Emancipation, Reconstruction, and Jim Crow, and ending in the Civil Rights and modern era, students learn through the lens of African-American leaders in each era, and engage with primary source documents. In this celebratory month of African-American History, 306 brings to life the empowering stories of the African-American community and helps students draw inspiration from remarkable women and men!

This searchable database currently includes lesson plans aligned to the NC Essential Standards, as well as activities for use in school, after school and extra-curricular settings. To ensure compatibility, files are available in PDF format. You must have Adobe Reader installed to access the materials, which is available for free at http://get.adobe.com/reader/.
DIRECTIONS FOR SEARCHING LESSON PLANS
When entering the database, a master list of all lesson plans for all courses available will be visible. Click on the lesson title to open and/or download it. Files that have an accompanying Power Point presentation will have a PPT icon to the right of the lesson title. (When you see a lesson title repeated in the master list, it is because there are versions of that lesson aligned to more than one course.)

NC Museum of History Exhibits
North Carolina and World War I Now open through Memorial Day More than half a million visitors have now experienced some of what it was like to “step in the boots” of a Tar Heel soldier in the First World War. Experience our new exhibit on the triumphs and struggles of North Carolina’s Reconstruction era, a time when formerly enslaved men, women, and children set out to claim the rights and possibilities of new post–Civil War freedoms—but also a time that was limited from the outset, then cut short by a backlash of racism and terrorism. The North Carolina Roots of Artist Ernie Barnes Through Sunday, Mar. 3 Known for his unique style of elongation, energy, and movement, Barnes is the first professional American athlete to become a noted painter! This exhibition features many unpublished original paintings and includes artifacts from his Durham childhood and his football career.

The McIntyre Youth Leadership Challenge Igniting The Torch Of Leadership For The Next Generation
The McIntyre Youth Leadership Challenge strives to inspire and encourage high school youth to demonstrate the qualities of good citizenship by developing the skills required to seek solutions to the various problems within their local communities through research, public speaking and community action. It will be included in the North Carolina Bar Association’s 2019 observance of Law Day.
Four finalists will be chosen to attend the Law Day Celebration on May 3, 2019. In addition, a $1,000 donation will be made in honor of the first-place winner to an organization of their choice that addresses the issue identified in the winner’s speech.
Students must register by Monday, January 14, 2019, by completing the registration form (click on McIntyre Youth Leadership Challenge). Further information will be sent to the student upon registration.

Neville-Pribram Mid-Career Educators Awards
Smithsonian Libraries is calling for applicants for its Neville-Pribram Mid-Career Educators Awards. The awards grant funding for teachers and educators to explore the collections of the Smithsonian Libraries and make use of them for educational materials. The awards are open to middle & high school teachers, college teachers, and museum educators who are developing educational materials.
The 2019 program will take place at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Library in New York City. The 2019 Neville-Pribram Mid-Career Educator awardee will have the opportunity to:
- Explore, create, and share a project related to design.
- Engage with staff and researchers at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Library and Smithsonian educators
- Attend Smithsonian-sponsored lectures, symposia, programs, and events to enhance the resident experience.
Applicants must be teachers or educators working on curriculum development or educational publications. They may not reside within commuting distance of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Library, where they will conduct their research. One award is offered each year with a stipend of $750 a week. Applications close January 25th, 2019.

Grants Shared by the National Council for the Social Studies
The Award for Global Understanding Given in Honor of James M. Becker recognizes a social studies educator (or a team of educators) who has made notable contributions in helping social studies students increase their understanding of the world.
The award includes a $2,000 cash award, a session to present at the NCSS annual conference; complimentary NCSS conference registration; and up to $700 in transportation/lodging reimbursement.
More Information
The NCSS Grant for the Enhancement of Geographic Literacy was created to promote geography education in the schools; to enhance the geographic literacy of students at the classroom, district, or statewide level; and to encourage the integration of geography into the social studies curriculum/classroom. Award winners receive $2,500, a commemorative award, and present a session on their work at the NCSS Annual Conference.

In 1986 the Christa McAuliffe Reach for the Stars Award was established to help classroom teachers "reach for the stars" and achieve a dream that under ordinary circumstances would not be fulfilled. The Fund for the Advancement of Social Studies Education (FASSE) was created in 1984 by the Board of Directors of the National Council for the Social Studies. The purpose of the fund is to support research and classroom application projects which improve social studies education, foster enlightened citizenship, and promote civic competence.
The purpose of the $2,500 grant is to help a social studies educator make his or her dream of innovative social studies a reality. Grants will be given to assist classroom teachers in: 1) developing and implementing imaginative, innovative, and illustrative social studies teaching strategies; and 2) supporting student implementation of innovative social studies, citizenship projects, field experiences, and community connections.

In 1974, National Council for the Social Studies established the Carter G. Woodson Book Award for the most distinguished social science books appropriate for young readers that depict ethnicity in the United States. The purpose of this award is to encourage the writing, publishing, and dissemination of outstanding social science books for young readers that treat topics related to ethnic minorities and relations sensitively and accurately.
