The Creative Brain

The Creative Brain

A new documentary, which is a companion piece to the wildly successful book The Runaway Species, takes audiences on a journey with neuroscientist and best-selling author, David Eagleman, to meet accomplished professionals from across the creative spectrum, unravel the creative process, and encourage all of us to be more aware of creativity in STEM Education and Leadership. The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) recognizes STEM!!

Presidential Award for Excellence in Science and Math Teaching (PAEMST)

The National Science Foundation is currently accepting nominations and applications for the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) program. PAEMST is the highest honor bestowed by the United States government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. Since 1983, more than 4,800 teachers have been recognized for their contributions to mathematics and science education. Awardees serve as models to their colleagues, inspiration to their communities, and leaders in the improvement of STEM education.

Up to 108 awardees may be recognized each year.

The PAEMST program is open to outstanding STEM teachers in the 50 states; Washington, D.C.; the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico; Department of Defense Education Activity schools; and the U.S. territories as a group.

Anyone--principals, teachers, parents, students, or members of the general public--may nominate a teacher by completing the nomination form available on the PAEMST website. To submit a nomination, you will need the teacher’s name, email address, and school contact information. If you know more than one teacher deserving of this award, you may submit more than one nomination. Teachers may also apply directly at www.paemst.org

Presidential awardees receive a certificate signed by the President of the United States; a trip to Washington, D.C., to attend a series of recognition events and professional development opportunities; and a $10,000 award from the National Science Foundation. The National Science Foundation administers PAEMST on the behalf of The White House Office of Science and Technology Policy.

The nomination deadline is March 1, 2019 and the application deadline is May 1, 2019 for secondary school teachers (grades 7-12). Elementary school teachers (grades K-6) will be eligible to apply during a future cycle.

Did You Know?

STEM training in college is associated with higher earnings, whether working in a STEM occupation or not.

The earnings advantage for those with a college major in a STEM field extends to workers outside of STEM occupations. Among all non-STEM workers, those who have a STEM college degree earn, on average, about $71,000; workers with a non-STEM degree working outside of STEM earn roughly $11,000 less annually. To read more about STEM workforce and STEM training, be sure to visit the Pew Research Center FACTANK.

CHEMICAL ENGINEERS

Chemical Engineers apply the laws of chemistry and physics to
solve real world problems. They design, develop and test
equipment, processes and products that involve chemicals. A chemical engineer usually works in manufacturing, biotechnology
or health care. Job duties can include the design and development
of equipment, products, including plastic, paper, detergent and
gasoline or processes to use and manufacture chemicals or
biochemicals. Building on initial discoveries made by chemists,
chemical engineers use computer models and other processes to
test the efficacy of these products and their safety for consumers, laborers and the environment.

NC STEM Schools of Distinction

STEM Recognition

Get On the Map

If your school is a STEM school, let all of North Carolina celebrate the amazing things you do each day!

STEM is recognized as one of the highest in-demand educational programs, providing more opportunities for STEM graduates than ever. Throughout North Carolina, many schools are self-appointed as providing STEM instruction, but not all are effectively incorporating 21st Century Skills, inquiry-based instruction, post-secondary connections, and effectively utilizing the wealth of local and statewide resources.

The NC Department of Public Instruction, with support from the North Carolina Science, Mathematics, and Technology Education Center and the Friday Institute, has made available a rubric of identified attributes found within all successful STEM programs. This rubric is accessible on the DPI STEM Resources website and can be your tool for evaluating the strengths of your STEM program and potentially identifying areas for growth and improvement to better your students' learning experience and career opportunities.
For schools that are already performing these attributes at Prepared or Model levels, NCDPI invites you to create a portfolio of evidences to your outstanding work and join the 29 schools in North Carolina that have already been recognized by the State Board of Education as STEM Schools of Distinction! Visit the DPI STEM webpage for more information.
