NCDPI Office of Charter Schools (OCS) Updates

CHARTER SCHOOLS:  DID YOU KNOW?

Per NC General Statute 115C-218.90(a1) and State Board of Education (SBE) Policy CHTR-006, a charter school is required to maintain certification of at least fifty (50%) of its teachers from December 31 of each year through the end of the school calendar year.

Each month the Office of Charter Schools receives a licensure report, which utilizes data from each charter school’s PowerSchool schedule and the NC Online State Licensure system to calculate the percentage of licensed teachers.

Please note that expired, out-of-State, out-of-subject area, or out-of-grade level licenses do not count towards a charter school’s licensure percentage. Also, be aware that improper coding of teachers or courses, or lack of student assignment, or teacher social security numbers entered incorrectly could negatively affect the licensure percentage calculation.

For assistance with data issues, please contact the Home Base Help Desk at (919) 807-4357.

For specific questions regarding licensure, including how to obtain or renew a license, please contact (919) 807-3310.

Required Epicenter Regional Training

Contact: jay.whalen@dpi.nc.gov

The Office of Charter Schools is rolling out Epicenter, a new document management platform to collect, store, and report charter school information. To make sure schools are prepared to use the system we are hosting four (4) regional trainings to introduce the system and allow school-based users the opportunity to practice using it. The School Leader/Director and one additional person are required to attend the training. Each charter school has the autonomy to select the second person as they see fit, knowing that this system will require document submissions for performance framework, renewals, amendments, etc.

We are hosting four (4) regional trainings:

EAST: Tuesday, November 27th from 9:00 - 11:00am (Douglass Academy, 507 N 6th Street, Wilmington, NC 28401)

NORTH CENTRAL: Tuesday, November 27th from 4:00 - 6:00 pm (NCDPI, Room 504, 301 N Wilmington Street, Raleigh, NC 27601)

WEST: Wednesday, November 28th from 1:00 - 3:00 pm (Invest Collegiate Imagine, 1000 Brevard Road, Suite 175, Asheville, NC 28806)

SOUTHWEST: Thursday, November 29th from 9:00 - 11:00am (Invest Collegiate Transform, 2045 Suttle Avenue, Charlotte, NC 28208)

Join us in Cullowhee, NC on January 28-31, 2019 for the annual NCCAT Charter Conference. This program, designed specifically for charter school teachers, will focus on teacher leadership through advocacy, best practices, and school growth. We will explore how teachers can better advocate for their specific school and charters in general, and how to utilize your own leadership style to help support school initiatives. Teachers will learn best practices in STEM, literacy development, and digital learning and discuss ways to model these practices in your schools.

Interested participants must apply online and a select number of attendees will be selected. One teacher per charter school may apply and spots are limited. Apply Here!

NC Department of Public Instruction  (NCDPI)  Updates

2017-18 EVAAS data release

EVAAS data for the 2017-18 school year will be released Friday, Nov. 16, 2018, at 12:01 a.m.

The delay in this year’s reporting was due to changes required by the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA). We apologize for the delay and greatly appreciate your patience.

Given the late reporting of the prior year's growth data, we will forgo the usual "phased" release of the EVAAS data. The secure site will be fully updated on Nov. 16 and access will be granted to district and school administrators and teachers at that time.

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact educatoreffectiveness@dpi.nc.gov.
