Global Educator Digital Badge

How prepared are you to foster global awareness in your students or support that in your classrooms or schools? Do you know about the Global Educator Digital Badge where you have the opportunity to focus your professional development to develop your own global context and understanding of how to integrate throughout your curriculum those chances to build global competency in your students?


The State Board of Education approved North Carolina Global Educator Digital Badge (GEDB) is available for the following educator categories: Teacher, Teacher Leadership Specialist, Library Media Coordinator, Instructional Technology Facilitator, School Counselor, Career Development Coordinator, School Social Worker, School Psychologist, Speech Language Pathologist, Instructional Central Office Staff, Principal/Assistant Principal, Superintendent. Global Ready Schools/Global Ready Districts

Schools and Districts that wish to apply for the Global-Ready Acknowledgement or Designation status in 2018-2019 should complete the Intent to Apply form. This ensures that interested applicants receive resources and updates to assist them through the application process.  District applications are due December 1, 2018 and school applications are due on April 6, 2019. Complete the Intent to Apply form for school and district.


Global Collaboration Week

Global Collaboration Week will take place September 17-21 this year. During this week, experienced global educators and other professionals will host connective projects and events; GlobalEd Events will invite public participation by posting events to their website and sending promotional emails to our community. The goals of this week are to demonstrate the power of global connectivity in classrooms, schools, institutions of informal learning and universities around the world, and to introduce others to the tools, resources, and projects that are available to global educators today.

Building Global Competence—One Invention at a Time from EDWeek

Teaching for global competence should be part of every subject, but sometimes it's difficult to think of ways to integrate global learning into fields like engineering and science. Here, Nicki Sirianni, Outreach and Digital Marketing Specialist at WGBH, shares how Design Squad Global, based on the Emmy Award-winning PBS Kids television series and website, has brought together students from all over the world through afterschool clubs that focus on engineering and invention” (Sirianni, 2018).

NCDPI Learning through Languages (LtL) Informational Webinar @ 4 - 5 p.m.

Join DPI and UNC Global Area Studies on Thursday, September 20 for a webinar to learn more about the Learning through Languages High School Research Symposium. In this research competition, NC world language high school students have the opportunity to showcase their language, research, and presentation skills in a scholarly environment. Participation in the symposium is free and teams are selected to participate via application process.
Eligible students include those who study Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian or Spanish. Participating students are encouraged to be at Level III or higher, or heritage speakers. Student teams will choose a topic relevant to six research tracks with regional focuses: Contemporary Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America & the Caribbean, Middle East & North Africa, or Russia & East Europe. Teams will write a research paper and present it at the symposium in their respective language.
This is an excellent opportunity for students to engage in world language learning beyond the classroom. The program is designed to promote student learning in the areas of research methodology, technology literacy, and critical thinking and to encourage the learning of new academic vocabulary. Join program staff and NC DPI World Languages for an informational webinar on September 20 to learn more about program goals, logistics, awards, and more.

Event for High School Students: Learning Through Languages Symposium

The UNC Global Area Studies group is again offering the Learning Through Languages Symposium on Wednesday, December 12, which is a unique way for high school students to conduct and present research in their language of study. Eligible students include those in Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Russian or Spanish classes, including heritage speakers. Participating students are encouraged to be at Level III or higher. There is no cost to participate.
 
In teams of 2-3, students conduct research on contemporary issues in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America, or the Middle East and North Africa. Students write a 2-3 page research paper in their language of study and create a visual representation of their research, which is presented at the Learning Through Languages Symposium. Team applications will be available in the fall. Support for sponsoring teachers includes professional development on research methodology and classroom resources. Funding support for schools may be available.

World View K-12 Global Education Symposium

Our K-12 global education symposium is held each October at the William and Ida Friday Center in Chapel Hill, NC. This day-and-a-half program explores significant global issues, offers best practices and resources in global education and provides educators an opportunity to develop a global action plan for their classroom, school or system. This program is designed to meet the global education needs of K-12 classroom teachers of all disciplines, administrators, media coordinators, other school professionals, central office and all educators seeking the Global Educator Digital Badge.

 


NCTAN Seminar: How to Prepare Students for a Study Tour to Japan

The North Carolina Teaching Asia Network (NCTAN), as part of the 2018-19 NCTAN Seminars, will hold the How to Prepare Students for a Study Tour to Japan seminar on Saturday, September 29, 2018, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at UNC Chapel Hill, UNC Wilmington, and online via webinar. The session will discuss how to prepare students for a school trip to Japan. A travel agent in North Carolina will also join us to answer your questions on travel arrangements.

Humanities in Class Symposium: Sugar Mill, Sea, Society in Caribbean History

The National Humanities Center is hosting a one-day symposium for educators on Saturday, September 29, from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm at their location at 7 TW Alexander Drive, Research Triangle Park, NC. The symposium explores the complex landscape of the Transatlantic Slave Trade through archival investigations. Featuring source documents and artifacts from the National Archives of the United Kingdom, participants will learn hands-on strategies for unpacking the layers of this global system. Geography will be used as the organizing theme for each investigation, making the workshop accessible and transferable to any grade level or classroom setting. Registration is $15 and includes all sessions and lunch.


 

World View Community College Symposium

World View at UNC Chapel Hill will be hosting the 2018 Community College Symposium on November 14 - 15, 2018, at The Friday Conference Center in Chapel Hill, NC. This symposium will bring community college educators together with business and academic leaders to learn about the future of work within the context of the global economy. Through engaging in interactive breakout sessions, educators will gain knowledge and skills on how to incorporate global teaching and learning that will prepare students to thrive in a global workforce post-graduation. This program is designed for community college instructors of all disciplines, as well as administrators and staff. The cost is $175 per person or $600 for a team of four, and 15 professional development contact hours will be offered.
