The United States Senate Youth Scholarship
North Carolina applications and entry materials for the United States Senate Youth Program (USSYP) became available August 1!
The United States Senate Youth Program is a scholarship program that provides an educational opportunity for juniors and seniors interested in pursuing college coursework in history or political science. Student delegates winning the $10,000 scholarship and attending the week-long event in Washington, D.C. in March 2019 will hear major policy addresses by Senators, cabinet members and directors from other federal agencies.

Grant Opportunities
- School Safety Grants: This year the General Assembly worked with State Superintendent Mark Johnson to launch a new School Safety Grants Program, and a part of that program includes a funding opportunity for community partners to provide services to students in crisis and help students develop healthy responses to trauma and stress. - Learning To Give Grants: Starting in September 2018, mini-grant applications will be reviewed on the 22nd of each month and awarded throughout the 2018-19 school year until March 22, 2019.
Start with a Learning to Give lesson and inspire student action to address a community need. The Learning to Give mini-grants range from $250 to $500 with a simple, yet competitive application process and priority given to those who use social media to share their plans, discuss ideas, and reflect! #LTGMiniGrant #Teach1 Apply Now
- Classroom grants from the Association of American Educators (AAE) Foundation can be used for a variety of projects and materials, including but not limited to books, software, calculators, mathematics manipulatives, art supplies, audiovisual equipment, lab materials, and more. Applications are due March 1 and October 1, annually. Apply Now
- ClassWish helps teachers and schools attract donations for supplies from local businesses, alumni, and other members of the community. Teachers create a wish list of supplies, and ClassWish helps spread the word to parents and other supporters. Requests may be submitted year-round. Apply Now
How to Foster a Positive School Climate
Last year, educators witnessed far too many incidents of hate and bias in the hallways. As the new school year begins, take proactive steps to make your school a safer, friendlier place. You have the power! This package of resources from Teaching Tolerance offer tools for self-reflection and learning, as well as tips for creating a more welcoming environment that affirms the humanity of all students.

Build School-Wide Compassion, Leadership & Character: FREE Digital Resources & Webinar!
The Compassion Project, Honor Code &Character Playbook are web-based Social & Emotional Learning resources, available to North Carolina educators at no-cost!
Available via the EVERFI platform, these lesson-based resources blend offline learning with online reinforcement to help students practice peer-to-peer empathy and leadership, and support educators in building school community.
On September 27th at 3:30 PM, Justyn Knox (Department of Public Instruction) and Peter Kelpin (EVERFI) will be sharing more about these resources, and their alignment to the statewide Character Matters initiative. Participants will learn how to access the resources and how educators across the state are already implementing in their schools! Register via this link by September 26th.

North Carolina Poetry Out Loud
Poetry Out Loud is a national program sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation. Poetry Out Loud encourages students in grades 9-12 to learn about great poetry through memorization and recitation. This program, which is FREE for schools and students, helps students master public speaking skills, build self-confidence, and learn about literary history and contemporary life. Student have the opportunity to compete at classroom, school, district, state, and national levels for cash prizes and money for their schools to purchase poetry books for school use. Poetry Out Loud can be incorporated into English or theatre curriculum in 2-3 weeks and aligns with state and national standards.
