Last Edition of the First Friday

The purpose of the First Friday message began as a way to keep educators updated on what was happening throughout the ELA Standards review and revision process.  With implementation beginning this school year, we have decided to discontinue the First Friday message.  We will continue to create and send the quarterly newsletter, The ELA SCOOP.  We will also continue to send out timely resources, professional learning opportunities, and more.  Enjoy this last edition of the ELA First Friday!

Quick Reference Guides for the NC Standard Course of Study

The Quick Reference Guides for the North Carolina Standard Course of Study have been updated for the 2018-19 School Year.  There are nine Quick Reference Guides available – one for each of the grade levels from kindergarten through 8th grade. The inclusion of standards for all subject areas within single, grade-specific documents is intended to make planning for instruction more efficient and may be particularly useful for educators teaching multiple disciplines or collaborating to plan integrated instruction. The guides are available for free download (PDF files) or you may order the guides by grade level through NCDPI Publications.

ELA Parent Guides

The parent guides are now available for purchase through NCDPI Publications Sales. The grade level guides contain information to support parents with understanding the 2017 ELA NCSCoS. Each grade has an introduction to the standards, a scope of expectations for that grade level, reading and writing strategies, and resources for learning outside of school. Available in English and Spanish!  Visit NCDPI Publications for ordering information. The parent guides are also available for download(English) and (Spanish)

ELA Team Transition

Following 35 years in education, Dr. Julie Joslin begins her retirement effective August 1, 2018.

The ELA Team wishes her well!

We are pleased to introduce our interim Section Chief, Dr. Kristi Day!  Kristi has been a consultant with the ELA team for five years and (along with the entire ELA Team) is very excited to support all educators with the implementation of the new ELA Standard Course of Study.  We wish everyone a wonderful school year!
