CHILDREN IDEA 611 GRANT AND FISCAL ACCOUNTABILITY TRAINING
This full day training will be in two parts. The morning will be related to the
Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 611 Grant and how to
complete the application and the afternoon will relate to fiscal accountability.
It is recommended that the LEA send a team of
two consisting of the EC Coordinator/Lead teacher, the School Administrator,
and/or the Finance Office Representative.
The training will be held at the DPI Education Building at 301 North
Wilmington Street in Raleigh on August 22, 2018 from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm in Room
564.
The EC grants training, scheduled from 9:00-12:00, is intended for all
individuals who will be responsible for completing the IDEA 611 Grant for the
first time. The EC Grants training will
be hands-on as LEAs are walked through how to complete the grant application.
The Fiscal Accountability training, scheduled from 1:00-4:00, will also
be hands on and LEAs will receive information on preparing documentation for
fiscal review.

Lunch will be available on your own at several locations within walking
distance. Parking is available in nearby
lots for a daily fee.

Carolina has over 180 charter schools and several of the schools have similar
names, so we ask you to please include your charter school number in all
correspondence, preferably in the subject line. This will minimize
error and miscommunication.

School Safety Grants Program (SRO grants) application available
Attention School Leaders:
As you may know, this year the General Assembly worked with State
Superintendent Mark Johnson to launch a new School Safety Grants Program.
A
part of that program includes a funding opportunity for the training and/or
employment of school resource officers in North Carolina's elementary and middle
schools.
The application for funding, which will be awarded through a competitive
grant process, is linked below. The application deadline is July 13, 2018.

July 1, 2020, related to the identification of Specific Learning Disabilities
(SLD). This is the sixth in a series of fact sheets related to the definition, evaluation and
identification of students with SLD under the policy addendum approved by the
NC State Board of Education on February 5, 2016.
These fact sheets are intended to support your efforts in
preparing for full implementation by July 1, 2020. Please
share and discuss this information with all appropriate staff
within your district.

OPPORTUNITY FOR LEA/CHARTER SCHOOLS
The ESL/Title III team within the K-12 Standards, Curriculum
and Instruction Division is excited to offer the English Learner
(EL) Support Conference: Growing Success for ELs on August 7-9, 2018 at
Greensboro College.
This year’s conference will
offer fourteen (14) different 3-day courses with participants
choosing one to attend for all 3 days.
Connections to digital tools and
components of the teacher evaluation instrument (NCEES) will be embedded within
each course.
The conference supports the statewide vision “to build capacity at
the local school system/charter level and sustain statewide implementation of
research-based strategies to meet the needs of our English learners.”
Audience: Administrators,
Content teachers, ESL teachers and others working with English learners.
At the Growing Success for ELs
Summer Conference, you will join educators interested in learning
and sharing best practices in EL education.
During our courses,
participants will review second language acquisition methodologies,
academic vocabulary and discourse strategies, and scaffolding techniques to
enhance language development instruction with English learners.
