N.C. DISTRICT TO START SPANISH, URDU PROGRAMS

A North Carolina district next school year will launch bilingual programs for English-language learners at two elementary schools. Instruction in Spanish and Urdu along with English will be offered to kindergartners, and a first-grade class will be added for the second year as students continue their language studies.

RESEARCHERS FIND VALLEYS, MOUNTAINS UNDER ANTARCTICA'S ICE

Scientists mapping the landscape below Western Antarctica's ice say valleys and mountains prevent ice in Eastern Antarctica from streaming through the western part of the continent. Thinning ice sheets, however, could increase the rate of ice flow from the continent's center, researchers say.

MAJOR DIE-OFFS HAVE HIT GREAT BARRIER REEF BEFORE

The Great Barrier Reef has weathered five major die-offs over the past 30,000 years, bouncing back hundreds or thousands of years after each one, according to findings published in Nature Geoscience. Past die-offs were caused by such events as rising sea levels, temperature changes and rising levels of sediment.

North Carolina Teaching Asia Network (NCTAN)/ National Consortium for Teaching about Asia (NCTA) will hold funded seminars for K-12 teachers (up to 25 in-service teachers) --- “China Now” on August 9 (Thu.) and “How to prepare students for a study tour to Japan” on September 29 (Sat.)
