United States flag

Information about flag alerts

Over the past few months, DPI has received questions from LEAs and schools regarding alerts for lowering U.S. flags at North Carolina public schools. Please know the following information:

  • Flag alerts from the President of the United States do not apply to state facilities
  • Flags at N.C. public schools are lowered based on action from the governor
  • DPI does not control flag alerts, but does communicate them to LEAs as soon as we receive them from the governor
  • Anyone can check flag alerts at the Department of Administration's website: https://ncadmin.nc.gov/flag-alerts

Please contact drew.elliot@dpi.nc.gov with any questions.

Promotional materials design contest for Summer Nutrition Programs

DPI’s School Nutrition Services has announced its Summer Nutrition Programs Promotional Materials Contest. The contest asks middle and high school students to help design promotional content, such as music, a theme song, jingle, rap, dance, skit, PSAs or other animated creation, to get the word out across the state to children and teens about NC Summer Nutrition Programs.

More than 1 in 4 N.C. kids struggle with not knowing where their next meal will come from. During the school year, many students rely on the nutritious meals served through the School Breakfast Program, School Lunch Program, and Afterschool Meals Program. Hunger does not take a summer break.

For NC Summer Nutrition Programs info, contest rules, including deadlines, and the entry form, go to: https://childnutrition.ncpublicschools.gov/.

For contest questions, contact Cynthia Ervin, NCDPI, Summer Nutrition Programs Manager, at cynthia.ervin@dpi.nc.gov

21st Century Community Learning Centers grants

DPI has issued the 2018-19 request for proposals for the 2018-19 21st Century Community Learning Centers (CCLC) competitive grant program. The 21st CCLC grants support the creation of community learning centers that provide academic-enrichment opportunities during non-school hours for children, particularly students who attend high-poverty and low-performing schools.

The CCLC program helps students meet state and local student standards in core academic subjects, such as reading and math; offers students a broad array of enrichment activities that can complement their regular academic programs; and offers literacy and other educational services to the families of participating children.

The 2018-19 RFP, including application guidance, application worksheets, and other resources are available on the 21st CCLC webpage. Applications are now being accepted through the web-based grants management system, the Comprehensive Continuous Improvement Plan (CCIP). The deadline for submitting the 2018-19 application is May 30. If you have any questions, please contact donna.brown@dpi.nc.gov.
