Keep Tabs on Your Goals Progress
Thank you for completing the NCVIP 2017-18 Interim Review task.
Next up is the 2017-18 Annual Performance Evaluation in June so now is a great time to review your goals page for:
* Three to five SMART goals that collectively weigh 100 percent;
* Any goals in a ‘pending modification approval’ status; and
* Updated goal progress.
Additional information regarding the NCVIP Annual Performance Evaluation timeline and next steps will be provided as it becomes available through the Office of State Human Resources.
In the meantime, please reference NCVIP support materials on the DPI Intranet under ‘Human Resources’ (Divisions dropdown), and LMS transcripts (available in the HR/Payroll System) in preparation for your NCVIP Annual Performance Evaluation.

NC K-3 Formative
Assessment Process:
Success During the Kindergarten Year
Teachers,
instructional coaches, and administrators in North Carolina’s public schools
are sharing how their engagement with the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process
is impacting teaching and learning in classrooms across the state. Kim Brooks, a kindergarten teacher at Hawks
Nest STEAM Academy in Gaston County Schools, shared the following story. This story illustrates the importance of
utilizing whole-child data from the Kindergarten Entry Assessment (KEA) portion
of the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process to make instructional decisions for
children.
Kim
Brooks had a student who was performing poorly on literacy
assessments. However, in looking at the
whole child, she began to notice strengths not reflected in some of the
literacy data previously gathered.
Through providing hands-on experiences that engaged students and
supported the formative assessment process aligned with the KEA, Kim began to notice the student’s abilities to complete project-based learning
activities.
The student displayed
higher-order thinking skills and a strong academic vocabulary that had not been
evident from looking only at isolated data.
These observations provided Kim with a more complete picture of
the child so that she could better meet his needs and support academic
success. She began Tier II
interventions, utilizing the letter-naming progression to determine
instructional goals. Because she had
observational data regarding the student’s interests and approach to learning,
she incorporated project-based learning and high-interest reading
materials as she adapted and responded to the student’s instructional
needs. In addition, she involved the
child’s mother in interventions.
By the
end of the year, the student was reading at grade level on the TRC portion of
Reading 3D. In fact, the boy’s
mother reports that he now asks for books instead of toys when they go
shopping! Kim attributes growth
for this child to an engagement in the formative assessment process and attention
to various domains of learning and development, rather than one isolated
academic area.

Office 365 Email Warning Banner Introduced Today
NCDPI is implementing a change to some of your emails. DIT implemented a warning banner for all inbound email from external domains and advised that other state agencies follow suit.
The purpose of the banner is to alert recipients that the email originated outside DPI, and extra scrutiny should be exercised before clicking on links or replying to the email.
We are adding the following warning banner:
“CAUTION: External email. Do not click links or open attachments unless verified. Send all suspicious email as an attachment to report.spam@nc.gov OR to kc.hunt@dpi.nc.gov."
This banner will appear at the top of external email right below the subject line. By reporting SPAM, it will allow the emails to be analyzed for methods of blocking and/or to block the linked sites from downloading malicious code.

As part of his Superintendent's Arts Initiative, Mark Johnson encourages all NCDPI staff to enjoy special short performances by students in the first-floor lobby of the Education Building each month as we highlight the important work our educators, students, and communities are doing through arts education in North Carolina. We'll also be spotlighting partnerships with professional organizations during each of these performances.
Our next student performances are scheduled for April 16 and May 10 - both at 11:30 a.m. in the lobby.
You won't want to miss these opportunities to support NC students!
