Junior Letter from ACT – Selecting Colleges/Universities to Receive ACT Scores

Before the February 27, 2018, ACT test date, students will be required during an in-school session to complete the pre-test portion of their answer document. At this time, students will have the opportunity to select up to four colleges and universities to receive their ACT scores (free of charge). The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) recommends the pre-test session be completed as soon as possible so that schools are prepared for the ACT administration in the event of any unexpected inclement weather delays or school closings.

To encourage students to be thorough in completing the pre-test portion, ACT is providing schools with a junior letter (see attached) to distribute to students. A list of North Carolina college and university codes is provided on the reverse side of this letter. Students may wish to discuss these choices with their parents/guardians before the pre-test session. Students are allowed to bring the North Carolina College and University Codes document with them to the session to help identify their school selection(s).

Also included in this letter is information on how students can create a free ACT profile account from home. By following the link included in the letter, students can begin ACT’s college and career planning self-assessments.

Please ensure the attached junior letter is distributed to the appropriate students at your school so that they may discuss the information with their parents/guardians and have the necessary information to complete the pre-test portion before the February 27 test date. A Spanish version of the Junior letter is also attached if needed.

K-3 Formative Assessment

NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process:
Success During the Kindergarten Year

Teachers, instructional coaches, and administrators in North Carolina’s public schools are sharing how their engagement with the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process is impacting teaching and learning in classrooms across the state.  The following story illustrates the the valuable instructional benefits of utilizing whole-child data from the Kindergarten Entry Assessment (KEA) portion of the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process to support students’ development.

Robyn Sutton, a 20-year veteran teacher working in Duplin County Schools, shares that the NC K-3 Formative Assessment Process has been “the greatest professional development experience for me since I received National Board Certification.”  She continues, “The K-3 Formative Assessment Process is not just another ‘assessment’ for teachers to administer.  While summative assessment is still an integral piece of the puzzle in my classroom, the K-3 FAP provides a platform for documenting the guiding information that we learn about our children throughout our daily interactions with them when they are placed in challenging yet developmentally appropriate settings.”

“This process has been so affirming and inspiring for me as a teacher.  I have had the opportunity to observe a NC Demonstration Classroom, attend the NC Association for the Education of Young Children (NCaeyc) conference, and train my district on the importance of formative assessment and developmentally appropriate practices in our classrooms. With my own students, I have been empowered to delve deeper into teachable moments and student needs, and I am able to provide rationale for each of my lessons and daily practices based on how young children learn best. I am personally so grateful for the K-3 FAP and how it has reignited my passion for effectively teaching kindergarten students.”
