Charter Renewal Notification for Schools with Charter Terms Expiring 2019 - Reminder
Thirty-seven charter schools have charter terms expiring in 2019. Per G.S. § 115C-218.6. (b), the State Board of Education shall renew a charter upon the request of the chartering entity.
The attached letter reminds the board of directors of each respective school on the list below to submit its renewal request to begin the process. Specifically, the renewal request is due Thursday, August 31, 2017, must be submitted on your school’s letterhead and include the board chair’s signature.

2018 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year Program - Reminder
NCDPI is pleased to coordinate the 2018 Burroughs Wellcome Fund North Carolina Teacher of the Year (TOY) Program.
The program provides an opportunity to honor and recognize exemplary teachers in North Carolina and to call attention to the importance of the teaching profession. Instructions for school level TOY coordinators can be found here, including a timeline for the selection process.

There are over 80 charter schools live in the system and many are already posting positions, so we encourage you to take advantage of this resource as soon as you can. We have thousands of applicants in the system which your school will have access to when you go live in the system.
The steps associated with implementation are:
- Contact Craig Tucker at craig.tucker@dpi.nc.gov to request an NC School Jobs workbook
- Complete the workbook and submit your school’s logo
- Participate in training
- Familiarize yourself with the system
- Execute a few cutover steps and go-live in the system

The next webinar training is scheduled for Wednesday, August 2. Please visit this website to learn more about and register for the training opportunities. Webinars last 1.5 hours with the ability to continue an additional 30 minutes if requested. Team members from the service provider, Jeff Davenport and Bill Barry, lead the trainings and are available to assist you with the implementation process.

NC Virtual Public School (NCVPS) Anniversary Symposium
The North Carolina Virtual Public School is
turning 10! NCVPS is celebrating a decade in online teaching and learning
and invites you to its 10-Year Anniversary Symposium.
The Symposium will bring you and NCVPS together to connect, share, and learn about online and digital learning. NCVPS will
commemorate the past ten years and look at the future of learning.
The Symposium begins with a Recognition Banquet on
Friday, October 20, 2017,
at Marbles Kids Museum at
6:00 pm
. It will conclude with a day of Concurrent Sessions on
Saturday, October 21, 2017,

North Carolina School for the Deaf Advisory Council to Meet
The North Carolina School for the Deaf Advisory Council will hold its
quarterly meeting on Thursday, Aug. 3, from 2-5 p.m., at the Historic
Rusmisell Museum on the North Carolina School for the Deaf campus, 517 West
Fleming Drive, Morganton.
A tentative agenda for this meeting is attached.
American Sign Language and Voice Interpreters will be provided at the
meeting. A Spanish interpreter also will be available. Prior notice of other
languages requested will be required to make suitable arrangements.

State Board of Education
Subcommittee Schedules Conference Call
A subcommittee of the North
Carolina State Board of Education will meet via conference call on Monday, July
31, from 12 – 1 p.m.
The conference call will be hosted from the 7th
Floor Board Room, Education Building, 301 N. Wilmington St., Raleigh.
Subcommittee members
will review a request from Aristotle Preparatory Academy Charter School to
partner with a charter management organization then develop a recommendation
regarding the request for State Board of Education consideration at its August
meeting.
The meeting will be audio
streamed for those who cannot attend. Questions regarding this meeting may
