Reflections from Mr. Alex Quigley, Chair, Charter Schools
Advisory Board (CSAB)
The CSAB closed our meeting on May 8, 2017 talking about strategic planning. Attached is the strategic planning document we used to drive the session. With many of the CSAB members ending their terms, it was appropriate to spend additional time reflecting and adjusting our practices where needed.
As a CSAB we plan strategically each year and encourage all school board and their leaders to do the same. Strategically planning allows everyone to know your goals and where you should end for an established time period and helps us measure our successes and failures. As we reflect on our practices, it is important to have a plan of action to drive our actions and decision making to ensure all students receive a quality education.
To drive this meeting we focused on our mission "Ensuring the existence of high quality charter schools." To ensure we are working to uphold our mission we focused on the following questions:
-
What
lessons were learned from the application selection process this year? How
can we improve?
-
What
lessons were learned from the renewal process this year? How
can we improve?
- What
can we do to continuously improve from a policy prospective?
We also used a recently released article from the Fordham Institute to focus our conversations and to drive our reflections (see attached). As we concluded our strategic planning session, we discussed the impact of different legislative bills currently proposed in this long session. We encourage you to read the bills that will impact the charter landscape as we move into the next school year and to review the CSAB meeting minutes of this discussion which will be posted to the Office of Charter Schools website by the end of this month. To view previous 2017 Weekly Legislative Updates click here.
Thanks for all you do for students attending NC Public Charter Schools.
