The
second round of public comment sessions on North Carolina’s Every Student Succeeds Act plan begins
on Thursday at West Wilkes Middle School (Wilkesboro) from 5-7 p.m. Other sessions will be
held Oct. 12 (Jacksonville High School, Jacksonville); Oct. 18 (Long Hill
Elementary, Fayetteville); Oct.
19 (Tarboro High School, Tarboro; note time of 4-6 p.m.); Oct. 24 (Tuscola High
School, Waynesville); and Oct. 25 (Career and Technical Education Center, Burlington).
All sessions except for Tarboro will
be held from 5-7 p.m.
As in the first set of public comment
sessions, all community members are invited to attend and to share their views
about how North Carolina can best identify and measure school quality. As you
know, the new federal law continues to require states to measure reading, math
and science performance, but we do have flexibility to identify other measures
that are important to North Carolinians. We will take the information and ideas
from these sessions and use that to continue refining North Carolina’s draft plan. We are on track to submit this plan to
the U.S. Department of Education in March.
In addition to the public comment
sessions, please remember that anyone can provide ESSA feedback at any time
through our Let’s Talk application
by selecting ESSA as a dialog topic.

Through a collaboration with MCNC,
IDAuto and SAS, NCDPI Technology staff are pleased to announce that effective
Friday, Oct. 7, statewide users of
EVAAS will be able to access the application through the NCEdCloud Identity
Access Management system. EVAAS provides North Carolina’s educators with tools
to improve student learning and to reflect and improve on their own effectiveness.
Access to this application through the
NCEdCloud single sign-on portal will provide for better application access
efficiency for educators. Users will see an EVAAS icon upon login to NCEdCloud
on Oct. 7. Further user instructions will be provided by SAS.
In the event that you cannot see the
EVAAS icon or cannot access the application, please contact the NCDPI Support
Center at 919.807.4357 or your Remedy

Multi-Tiered System of Support: Installation
Installation of a Multi-Tiered System of Support (MTSS) takes time.
NCDPI staff are encouraging implementation teams to go slow and build a
sustainable system that is responsive to all
students. In order to build an efficient, effective multi-tiered system, teams
must create time and space to problem solve the critical components of MTSS.
District MTSS teams are engaging in a hybrid professional development
model. Participation in the content requires an average of one hour each week
by every member of the district team. Cohorts 1 & 2 are beginning Module 2
while Cohorts 3 & 4 are beginning Module 1.
The course has incorporated time for district MTSS team meetings,
which are essential to building common language and skills for implementation
planning. District MTSS teams attending the face-to-face module preview
sessions began planning for course engagement, collaboration and communication.
Thank you for the vital role you play as a member of the MTSS
leadership team and for supporting your district team in implementation.

Behavior Systems consultant Amy
Jablonski for more information.
