North
Carolina is one of 17 states participating to a new program sponsored by the
Council of Chief State School Officers to reset career education by improving
rigor and value to the programs that prepare our high school graduates for
high-skilled, high-demand jobs.
Using
economic development data and partnerships with community employers, North
Carolina and the other participating states will design more rigorous career
readiness pathways to culminate in credentials for students. This work builds
on the work our Career Technical Education programs are doing already.
Last
year, students earned more than 130,611 professional credentials through CTE
courses, and I look forward to increasing that figure. We want to ensure that
our CTE courses set high expectations and are well aligned with the needs of
employers and industries.
The
goal is not just to move numbers up, but to provide more opportunities for
young people to pursue careers that interest them and that provide for them and
their families.

America's Legislators Back to School Program
America's
Legislators Back to School Program, sponsored by the National Conference of
State Legislatures, kicked off Sept. 14 and will run throughout the school
year.
Educators
are encouraged to extend invitations to their local representatives to visit
and talk with students about the legislative process and what it’s like to be a
state legislator: the processes, the pressures, and the debate - the
negotiation and compromise that are the fabric of representative democracy.
Classroom discussions
are being encouraged over school-wide assemblies.
North
Carolina has actively participated in the America’s Legislators Back to
School
program since its inception in 1999.

Advisory Board for its review before members make recommendations to the State
Board of Education.
NCVPS is Seeking Certified Teachers for Multiple Roles
You know
that certified North Carolina teachers teach NCVPS classes, but did you know
that NCVPS courses are designed by teams of North Carolina teachers?
That’s
right! All NCVPS courses are developed or revised by teams of North Carolina
certified teachers with content expertise. NCVPS instructors and developers
also take back valuable digital, online, and blended-learning instructional
skills to their traditional classrooms, creating a very complimentary cycle.
NCVPS is
currently seeking North Carolina certified teachers for course development,
revision and instruction. Please share the following link with your teachers so
that they, too, can apply to be part of the NCVPS experience: http://www.ncvps.org/index.php/work-for-ncvps/.
