Back to the School Safety
As the new school year is about to begin, Sampson County Government encourages everyone to prioritize safetyābecause every child deserves a secure and supportive learning environment.
šø For Drivers:
Plan ahead for potential delays between the hours of 6 - 9 am and 2 - 4 pm. Slow down in school zones. Stop for school buses with flashing red lights. NEVER pass a stopped school bus. Stay alert for children crossing streets or walking near traffic.
šØāš©āš§āš¦ For Parents & Guardians:
Make sure the school has accurate contact and medical info. Review the school driving routes. Discuss walking routes, bus rules, and who is allowed to pick up your child. Monitor screen time and talk about responsible internet use and online safety.
š§ For Students:
A new school year means new friends! Be inclusive, respectful, and supportive. If something feels wrong or unsafe, talk to a trusted adult right away. Know who to contact in case of emergencies.

Quick Burrito Bowl
Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Looking for an easy throw-together dinner, or a simple meal for lunch? This Quick Burrito Bowl from our Med Instead of Meds website (Medinsteadofmeds.com) is absolutely delicious, versatile, and a great way to use up leftovers, frozen foods or fresh ingredients. This well rounded meal contains all the right ingredients to keep you full and satisfied (see why in the formula below).
For this Quick Burrito Bowl, use the following formula: BaseĀ (brown rice or other whole grain) ā This keeps you full longer (and did you know fiber is also great for your heart?!). VegetablesĀ (cooked or raw) ā These contain micronutrients to help our body function at its best. ProteinĀ (beans, lean meat, or seafood) ā Protein is the building block for all things in our body! It helps to build and repair tissue, is involved in production of hormones, and helps you feel full longer. ToppingsĀ (salsa, cheese, spices) ā We need these to feel satisfied. Flavor helps us enjoy our meal, which is very important too!
Ingredients
- 1 cup brown rice, cooked
- 1 cup frozen or fresh sliced onions and peppers, cooked
- ½ cup cherry tomatoes, halved
- 1 cup lettuce, chopped
- ½ cup black beans, rinsed and drained
- 2 Tablespoons salsa
- 1 Tablespoon nonfat, plain Greek yogurt
- 1 Tablespoon reduced-fat, shredded cheddar cheese
- Optional toppings: cilantro, lime wedges, green onions, red onion, hot sauce
Directions:
- Measure cooked brown rice and place into a medium to large size bowl.
- If rice is not cooked, cook according to package directions.
Preheat a small skillet over medium heat. Place sliced onions and peppers into skillet and cook for about 5 minutes, or until vegetables are slightly soft. Place on top of cooked rice.
Wash and rinse lettuce and cherry tomatoes. Chop or slice vegetables to your preference. Place on top of brown rice.
Drain and rinse a can of black beans. Place ½ cup on top of brown rice and vegetable mixture. Top with salsa, yogurt, and cheese.
Add desired toppings (optional): cilantro, lime wedges, green onions, red onions, and/or hot sauce.
We have a Med Instead of Meds class coming up this fall! Make sure youāre on our email list and/or following us on Facebook. To get on our list, email Sydney Knowles at Sydney_knowles@ncsu.edu.
