WRAL Soccer Complex Field Upgrades

The City of Raleigh is almost complete with two lighted, state of the art synthetic soccer fields at the WRAL Soccer Complex with the Capital Area Soccer League (CASL). The fields will be lighted and have special drainage features to allow for quick play after a rain or other bad weather. The project uses recycled rubber products and has a life of about ten years until the artificial grass needs to be replaced. The funding is through a 2/3 bond passed by Raleigh City council in 2012.

KaBOOM! Playground Build at Peach Road Park

On August 6, City Council accepted a KaBOOM! grant to build a new playground at Peach Road Park. In 2006, 2009, and 2010, the City of Raleigh partnered with KaBOOM!, a nonprofit organization that promotes community build playground projects, to build the playgrounds at Apollo Heights Park, Green Rd Community Center, Lane Street Mini-Park and Southgate Park. All four projects were very successful and involved a number of volunteers from the community coming together to construct new playgrounds in a single day!  The KaBOOM! community playground build at Peach Road Park will take place on September 28.

Update on Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve

Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve consists of approximately 146 acres located on an oxbow of the Neuse River in northeast Raleigh. The property was purchased in 1994 to serve as a future park site. A Master Plan for the site was adopted by Raleigh City Council in 2009.

The City is currently finalizing the plans for Phase 1 development.  Phase 1 improvements are to include road widening/paving, dam reconstruction, parking, signage, Neuse River Greenway Trail connection, internal soft surface walking trails, interim and long-term natural resource management,  restroom facilities and a picnic shelter.

  • Horseshoe Farm Nature Preserve was selected by the Sustainable Sites Initiative (SITES) to participate in a program testing the nation's first rating system for green landscape design, construction and maintenance. To learn more about SITES please visit http://www.sustainablesites.org

The construction bid for Phase 1 is scheduled to be advertised November 1, 2013 and anticipate an early February 2014 construction start date. Construction will take approximately 10 months.
