City of Raleigh to Co-Host Statewide Equipment and Truck Road-E-O June 21-22

The North Carolina Chapter of the Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) will be holding its annual Equipment and Truck Road-E-O June 21-22 at two locations in Wake County. The event will be hosted by Wake County Solid Waste Management, City of Raleigh Solid Waste Services, Republic Services, and Waste Industries.

More than 100 contestants representing public and private waste-collection services will be competing for top driving, operating and mechanical honors. Drivers are required to maneuver competition vehicles through a set course, and mechanics are tested in areas of troubleshooting and diagnostics. All categories are judged on accuracy and time.

The competition will take place at the City of Raleigh Wilders Grove Solid Waste Services Facility at 630 Beacon Lake Drive in Raleigh and at the South Wake Landfill at 6130 Old Smithfield Road in Apex. The competitive event will be free and open to the public at both locations on Saturday, June 22 between 8:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. Spectators may watch as drivers attempt to swerve their large trucks through barrels, parallel park and back into an alley. Young children who are fascinated by big trucks, tractors, and heavy equipment will particularly enjoy watching the competition. Some equipment will be set aside especially for children at the event in Raleigh; children will be allowed to touch the equipment and climb into the driver’s seat.

The City of Raleigh is particularly pleased that the event organizers chose to hold the event at the Wilders Grove Solid Waste Services Facility for a second consecutive year. The 2012 event drew a large crowd to the facility in its first year of operation as the nation’s only integrated solid waste services facility designed to LEED Platinum standards.

In addition to the competition, the two-day statewide event includes competitive games, receptions and an awards banquet. First- and second-place winners will qualify for the SWANA International Road-E-O to be held in October in Denton, Texas.
