Raleigh System Plan

Visioning Sessions, Dream Big!

From May 13th - May 17th, 2013, the Parks and Recreation Department will host a five-day Visioning Session comprised of 15 sessions covering a range of Parks and Recreation themes, from Arts and Greenways to Historic Resources and Active Adults.  It will be a time to DREAM BIG about the future of Raleigh's Parks and Recreation Department.  City staff will be on-hand and everyone is welcome and encouraged to attend.  The full schedule of events and session descriptions are available here.

The week will begin with a social Kick-Off Event on Monday, May 13th from 6:00-8:00 pm with opening remarks from Mayor Nancy McFarlane and Parks and Recreation Director Diane Sauer. The Kick-Off will also include opportunities for input on all Vision Themes. The week will close with an Open House on Friday, May 17th from 3:30-6:30 pm, during which the results of the workshop will be presented.

The Kick-off Event, Open House and all Visioning Session will be held at the Raleigh Convention Center, 500 South Salisbury St.  Parking for the event will be free. Free parking will be available in the Performing Arts Deck south of the Raleigh Convention Center (128 W. South Street). Light refreshments will be available.

Soccer Upgrades:  WRAL Synthetic Soccer Field

The Parks and Recreation Department has awarded our first Synthetic Soccer field project to Ballard Construction out of Cary. They are scheduled to begin construction on or about June 1, 2013.

We will be engineering another field at Dorothea Dix which will be dependent upon State approval.  This is part of the two-thirds bond program.

Mordecai Historic Park Interpretive Center

Centurion Construction Company Inc. has been awarded the Mordecai Interpretive Center Renovation and Addition construction project. Construction is expected to be complete in spring 2014.

Historic Allan Herschell Carousel Opens at John Chavis Memorial Park

Thanks for joining us on April 20 for the grand re-opening of the historic carousel at John Chavis Memorial Park.  The event was a great success thanks to you!  If you didn't get the opportunity to come read the News & Observer article about the event.

A public meeting will be held on Monday May 20, 7pm at Lake Johnson Boathouse Conference Room, 4601 Avent Ferry Road, to review Stadium Drive improvements related to Lake John Center.

The concept for the Southeast Raleigh Tennis Center at Barwell Road Park will be presented for comment at a public meeting May 21, 2013 from 5-7 pm at the Barwell Road Community Center, 3935 Barwell Road, to solicit comment.  A 30% concept on the site plan and building will be available.
