Approval Given to Plan for Barwell Road Community Park

The System Integration Plan for Barwell Road Community Park was unanimously adopted by the Raleigh City Council today. The System Integration Plan documents existing site conditions at the park and includes a set of guidelines for interim management of the park property.

The City of Raleigh purchased the 54-acre Barwell Road Community Park site in 2001. Since then, a community center and elementary school have been jointly developed on the property by the City and Wake County. The western portion of the park will be the site of the planned Southeast Raleigh Tennis Center. The undeveloped eastern section of the park is the primary focus of the System Integration Plan.

Interim management recommendations proposed for Barwell Road Community Park are organized into three categories in the System Integration Plan: safety, environment, and property issues. Recommendations in the plan include removing debris, cooperating with the City’s Public Utilities Department to remove old silt fence material from sewer easements to facilitate wildlife movement, and posting signs with City contact information so the public can report any issues in the park. The City’s land stewardship coordinator will be responsible for initiating requests to appropriate City staff to conduct the interim management tasks.

The System Integration Plan for Barwell Road Community Pak was drafted with input from the public. The Parks, Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board reviewed the plan and in February recommended the City Council adopt it.
