Approval Given to Design of New Fields at WRAL Soccer Center
Two synthetic multipurpose fields will be installed at the WRAL Soccer Center off Perry Creek Road. The Raleigh City Council voted unanimously today to approve the schematic design of the fields.
City staff was authorized to proceed with the construction phase for the two new fields. These new synthetic fields will replace soccer fields that are currently grass. They will have lights to accommodate nighttime games.
Construction of the synthetic multipurpose fields is estimated to cost $2.5 million, with $2.2 million coming from the City of Raleigh and the remaining $300,000 from private contributions. The City is using two-thirds general obligation bonds to fund its portion of the project, and the Capital Area Soccer League is applying for grants to cover the private funds.
Two-thirds general obligation bonds are a long-term financing option available to local governments in North Carolina under state law. The bond total can be up to two-thirds of the amount by which the municipality reduced its outstanding general obligation indebtedness in the preceding fiscal year. Last spring, the City Council voted to issue up to $9 million in two-thirds general obligations. Part of those funds was designated for soccer field upgrades.
The City of Raleigh hopes to begin construction of the two synthetic multipurpose fields on June 1. It will take 60 days to complete the fields.
