Sand Volleyball Courts at Jaycee Park Renamed for Rusty Lurwick
The Raleigh City Council, on Feb. 5, approved a request to rename the sand volleyball courts at Jaycee Park as the Rusty Lurwick Memorial Courts.
E. Russell “Rusty” Lurwick was an advocate for the sport of volleyball in the Capital City. Mr. Lurwick passed away in 2009 after battling aggressive colon cancer. Mr. Lurwick was one of the founders of the beach volleyball movement in Raleigh. In the early 1980s, Mr. Lurwick and several others founded the Inland Beach Volleyball Association. The association’s sole purpose was to promote beach volleyball in conjunction with the City of Raleigh Parks and Recreation Department.
The first sand volleyball courts were built at Jaycee Park. Sand volleyball courts also are available at Green Road Community Center, Carolina Pines Community Center, Eliza Pool Park, Honeycutt Park, Kiwanis Park, Lake Wheeler Park, and Williams Park.
The renaming request was approved by the Parks, Recreation and Greenway Advisory Board on Dec. 13.
